Neutral on abortion issue To the Editor: that are. outside ourmission. Over the past few months the March of Dimes has received several phone calls from concerned citizens who' question the Foundations stand on the abortion issue. Many of these citizens have stated that they have read material or listened to debate that identifies the March of Dimes to be a supporter of abortion. For the record, the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation does not recommend or advocate abortions, does not engage in or fund abortion research nor does the Foundation allow its grantees recommend abortion. Funds raised by the March of Dimes do not pay for abortions. to The March of Dimes remains neutral in the public debate regarding abortions. Abortion is an issue that deeply divides this country. The March of Dimes is not, and cannot be, involved in the abortion issue for two compelling reasons. First, we are entrusted with public contributions to promote healthy births, not to become involved in political and legal debates Second, we wish to continue our proud history as an organization in which people can put aside their differences to pursue a common goal healthy babies. The March ofDimes national research program is an important part of our efforts to promote healthy birth s, and has been responsible for numerous major scientific advances benefiting mothers, babies and children. Abortion plays no part in our research programs. March of Dimes research grantees are specifically prohibited from giving advice on abortion, or using March ofDimes funds for abortion research. While there is no national consensus on abortion, there is broad consensus on health, especially healthy babies. The March ofDimes is committed to involving volunteers and health professionals in our pursuit to prevent birth defects, low birth weight and infant mortality. Joni G. Lowe Division Board Chairman Southern Utah Division March ofDimes To the Editor: The spirit of freedom is spreading to the U.S.A As the Eastern Europeans are enthusiastically seeking relief from repressive government, so a movement is stirring here to pass a Liberty Amendment. It is already approved by the legislatures of nine states and was introduced into the U.S. Congress as H. J. Res. 23. The resolution has received support of thousands of signatures. The proposed amendment has four sections, as follows: The government Sec. 1. of the United States shall not engage in any business, profession, commercial, financial or industrial enterprise, except as specified in the Constitution. Sec. 2. The Constitu tion of any state, or the Congress of the United States shall not be subject to the terms of any foreign or domestic agreement which would abrogate this amendment Sec. 3. My heart really goes out to the poor Aaronic Priesthood boys in our LDS wards. Their young brains have not yet evolved to functioning on half as much blood and oxygen as us old curmudgeons. After about 60 years ofneckties (I never wore one until I was ten). Im sure if my brain ever got a full supply of oxygen on Sunday, Id be able to memorize the complete Pearl of Great Price in one day. Yet, bishops and sadly enough - counselors like me, are instructed to insist that deacons wear ties to pass the sacrament. Those poor kids sit there with their hands on the knot during the closing prayer and as soon as the amen is said, they rip it open and start to breathe again. Not only that, its discrimination. While the stylish man stands in a wedding reception line, eyes bulging, panting, his relaxed - if tearful - wife flanks him with her neck bare clear down to you know where. She may be immodest, but shes at least comfortable. And while a man wears a worsted wool suit coat for dress up, his wife wears a flimsy, cool, light blouse with no sleeves. She doesnt even wear a corset anymore - at least I dont d think so - although some of these Twiggees wonder. me make But now Im getting some reinforcement for my hatred of ties. A UPI report published in the Deseret News says that a Don R. And if you think its bad for your health, think what it does to your pocketbook. The father requested that the bill for the repair be given to him, and his son willingly took the assignment of cleaning up the broken glass which I hope is replaced with durable plastic glass to discourage other rock throwers. Like the watchful father, I hope all Ephraim citizens will report any questionable activities they see there and assist in protecting this precious and other monumental sites. wasp-waiste- - -- -- If we could just get Merrill Cook to campaign as hard to remove ties from mens necks as he does to remove sales tax from food, Id vote for him for governor or at least liberator. - But even with all my aversion to ties, I expect Beth will bury me in one. Snow College needs more student housing With . fall enrollment expected to be at a record level for the third straight year, Snow College officials are working hard to locate housing for an additional 100 or more students in homes around the local community. Many people have already made their homes available to students, said Snow College President Gerald Day. But theres still a great need for more help. As of the end of June, the Snow College Registrars Office was reporting an increase in class registrations of 28 percent over a year ago at this same time. Although such an increase is expected to narrow to about 10 to 15 percent by September, that still means Snow could have a fall enrollment of more than 1900 students. As a long-tersolution to solving Snows housing needs, m the college and several interested parties are currently working hard to develop new apartment-styl- e facilities, said Gene Hansen, president for Administrative Services. However, in the meantime, the pressing need is to work with local residents we can provide enough housing vice now. In addition to housing its new students, Snow has also been faced with providing more classes and faculty to teach them. "Students come to Snow because they know theyll get a quality education in a small class setting, said Dr. Day. To solve that problem the schools faculty'' will increase by seven new positions. Those new positions, along with the replacement of employees who are retiring or taking sabbatical leave will result in the hiring of 15 new people at the college this year.
