Show Two Manti High Letters to the Editor Uwi beautiful place. We are thankful for our heritage and have faith, courage and the knowledge of the everlasting values of life. Thanks to all for cards, flowers, loving thoughts, visits and food-- - they are appreciated. You are very special to us and we are grateful to you for welcoming us home. My wise and wonderful ld Uncle Wesley once told me a story about then Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson. During the Eisenhower Cabinet Administration, meetings would often involve discussions of how the polls would react, whose friends might benefit, how labels might be modified, whether it was expedient, and so forth. At just the right moment for greatest impact, Secretary Benson would say, But is it right? School Board minutes reflect V votes in numbers only and do not identify who voted aye" or nay. I want my voters to know that I was the lone nay vote in a decision at last weeks School Board meeting because I asked myself Secretary--noquestion and had to answer, No". The purpose of this letter is to reassure my voters that I neither favor nor disfavor Mrs. Brandt, Mr. Dailey, or any of the other possibilities (and there were some). I voted as I did for three basic reasons. First, I believe that the w Presi-dent-Benso- ns primary duty of the public schools is to assure a sound education in the core subjects, and I believe I was elected to represent that point of view. Hiring teachers without endorsement in the subjects they are asked to teach is, I believe, a violation of the trust you voters have placed in your elected board members. We have spent considerable time, money and teacher effort on the notion that we wish to create environments where learning can take place and to identify academic objectives and complete the necessary unit guides to ensure appropriate results. Reid trips to the state Capitol and other points of interest were Second, I believe that the primary duty of the public schools is to assure a sound education in the core subjects, and I believe competitive athletics, while valuable, are not our primary mission. In hiring teachers, we are obligated, I believe, to look first for maximum competence in academic assignments and then at coaching experience. Hiring someone primarily to coach football and incidentally to teach math and history is, I believe, a clear case of the tail wagging the dog. Third, I believe that the primary duty of the public schools is to assure a sound education in the core subjects, and I believe that all students will learn well what our schools want them to learn (thats the school district mission statement). We are teaching them that the interests of about 30 young men who voluntarily play on Gunnisons very first football team are more important than those of the hundred or so who are required to take math and history. We are teaching them that academic " We subjects are met to participate in a training program offered through the Job Training Partnership Act. The majority of the Board saw a different set of issues and voted otherwise. The civilized thing for the minority to do, I believe, is to say our piece, then get on with things. Be assured that I will continue to advocate the best qualified classroom teachers we can find to provide the sing in the shower. Theres something comforting and secure about locking yourself in the bathroom and bursting forth into song with a voice calibre you never dreamed you had (and your family wished you hadnt). I dont know how come it is that I can sing so well in the shower and so terribly out in public. I remember once as a young man I was conned into singing O Holy Night as a solo in a Christmas program. I practiced and practiced in the shower until I had it down perfect. Then when the performance came, I not only couldnt reach the highest note, I couldnt even reach the next highest.. .or the third highest. Thats when I made the resolution never to sing in public again and do all my singing in the shower. Ive kept that vow. (Oh 111 admit I sing occasionally in the darkroom or when Im out tilling the garden, but never with the same gusto as in the Then of course there are those risque ones I learned in the service. I dont dare really sing those in the shower. Its not that Beth would mind (shes used to me), but Id hate for the neighbors to think I had all those words in my vocabulary.. Occasionally, though I cant resist the temptation and with a naughty song. Thats when Beth turns on all the hot water taps in the house, thus reducing my pressure to zero and putting a stop to the whole sordid affair. To the Editor: students a hospital as advanced as others in much larger communities in other parts ofthe United States. And she should know, having just moved back to the area after living several years in Tennessee. In March of this year, Mrs. Ison, a radiology technologist at Sanpete Valley Hospital, and her family moved back to the area after living three years in Knoxville, Tennessee. They had moved to Tennessee when her husband was offered a job there in 1988. Working at a hospital in Newport, Tennessee she performed a variety of 60-be- d X-ra- y examinations. Even though Newport is a city of 30,000, and the hospital is larger than Sanpete Valley Hospital, it didnt offer many more services than what are available locally. Except for just a few pieces of equipment and a few more physicians, the people of Newport didnt have any better care or service than is available at Sanpete Valley Hospital, she said. Many people dont realize how lucky they are to have a hospital like this nearby. Mrs. Ison also noted several other significant differences she saw between the two hospitals. I feel the people who work here nt Sanpete Valley Hospital are much more friendly and work better as a team, she stated. Because we get along well, our patients get better and more efficient care. Mrs. Ison also noted that Sanpete Valley Hospital was very clean in appearance compared to the hospital in Tennessee. This may sound strange, she said, but the food at Sanpete Valley Hospital is much better also. That really matters to patients when they are sick in Why is it that the man who thinks hes a Caruso in the shower pales when the bishop asks him to sing in the ward choir?? While two men were fishing from a dock, one of them accidentally dropped his wallet into the water. They peered into the depths and watched as a carp swam by and scooped the wallet up in its mouth. Suddenly another carp appeared and snatched the wallet away, and then a third joined in. The two fishermen looked at each other in disbelief. USPS Probably one of the nicest things about coming back to the area is that its a good place to raise kids, Mrs. Ison said. I like the fact that the schools are smaller and the children have more of a chance to participate. Mrs. Ison is a native ofWales, and attended North Sanpete High School. She attended Radiology School at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake, and then workcl for a number of years at Sanpete Valley Hospital before moving to Tennessee. She has 11 years of experience and is certified by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists. She and her husband, Michael, live in Wales with their family. Mrs. Ison enjoys the outdoors, especially camping.. She also plays the piano and enjoys reading a variety of books. g. carp-to-car- The Manti Messenger tS.OOaar publiahod weakly tor Inotdo Sanpata County, gig.OOyaar outatdo Inc., IS S.
