Show Messenger-Enterpris- Pioneer Flashbacks Letters to the Editor by Quig Nielsen Charles Durkee, who had been governor ofUtah since 1865, had just returned to Utah from the east on the eve of the celebration. He was weak from the trip and with his somewhat fragile health did not attend. Brigham Young, president ofThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, had gone to visit the settlements in the southern part of Utah after the close of the Churchs April general conference, and did not return until after the ceremonies. Union Pacific started at Omaha and built westward 1,028 miles while the Central Pacific began at San Francisco and built eastward 878 miles. Keen rivalry between the two lines had helped complete the transcontinental railroad with unprecedented speed in the saga of railroad building. Rumors said Mormon leaders did not welcome the railroad with enthusiasm because of the outside influences it would bring. But Brigham Young said he wouldnt give much for a religion that couldnt stand the advent of the railroad. When I became a teacher, I found that a good way for kids to learn how to write is for them to write and write and write. So my students visited a retirement home, made friends with the greying residents and became pen pals with them. Angela was upset one day because her pen pal never once wrote her a letter. When we took on our project, we knew there would be problems with pen pals who have poor eyesight and arthritic hands, but we always got excited at the prospect of having our letters answered. No, Angela never did get a letter from her pen pal. But one day she received this note: My aunt recently passed away. As we were cleaning out her room we found several letters on her dresser tied with a ribboa They had your name on them. The nurse told me about your schools pen pal program. My aunt was very ill and could not write back, but I am told she would show your letters to all her visitors and have them read them to her over and over again. Tm glad she had you as a friend. I think tonight would be a good night to have my sons write to grandma. The word 'trivia" come from Latin for alluded to what we Intersection. At such crossroads, people stopped to trade smal talk. Especially at the beginning of the Fall Quarter for students just out of high school and living away from the security of their home is such an activity so timely. The registered institute students at the Ephraim LDS Institute pay a $6.00 activity fee, which allows them to register for as many classes as they feel their time schedule will comfortably handle; the majority of course, are enrolled in just one class.
