Twelve players and two managers comprised the team. They were seniors Neil Cox John Ericksen (Vaun), (McLoyd), Paul Frischknecht (Kay), Robert Longacre (Luzon), Douglas Ludvigson (Lafe) and Twenty-fiv- e David Olsen (Richard). Juniors included: Craig Armstrong (Milton), Russell Keisel (George), Ronald Larsen (Lendal), Norman Stott (Don), Leland Thompson (Lee R.), and Glen Olsen (Ray). Gleave. To capture the gold trophy the team in Red and White defeated Grantsville .72-6Uintah Cedar City and Emery County Here are some s miscellaneous and impressions of the team as remembered from this Silver Anniversary perspective. Coach Phil Johnson, then an assistant to Dick Motta at 0, 49-4- 46-4- 5 51-4- 1. tid-bit- State, told a coaching friend of mine that he had scouted both the A" and B tournaments, and MHS had the defense he had strongest observed. Defense certainly was the hallmark of this squad. Over the season (rounding off limited decimals) they opponents to 38 points per game while averaging 52. In many games most squad members saw considerable play in the second half. This helped the younger players on the team and they went on to a fine season in 1966-67- , much to the surprise of many fans. Perhaps the most amazing statistic in my mind, and one for Ripley, is that not one player fouled out of a game during the entire season. This occurred for two reasons: 1) The bench was deep; 2( The team purposely tried to not foul drivers, rebounders or dribblers. They drilled on foot position and body balance. Also this was an era when the fouling for profit" was jump-shooter- s, basketball as friends and to have seen them emerge as ll e Paul purchased. Frischknecht entered the store just as the picking process was going on. This looks like a lucky tie to me, the Templar guard observed. Today that same tie is wrapped around the trophy at MHS. Very instrumental in the success of the team was the coaching of the late Glen K. Goodwin. He worked with the when boys they were sophomores, and helped coach the varsity. A man with a quick sense ofhumor, he was loved by Manti High School State Basketball Championship Team of 1966. the players. Front row; Kenneth Black, Manager, Niel Cox, David Olsen, Coach Duringthe tournament, the Wilbur Braithwaite, David Anderson, Manaqer. 2nd row Craia defeated three champions Grantsville, Uintah and Cedar City. Their victory over Emery was not easy but they had won from the Spartans twice before duringthe season. The nextyear Uintah came back strong to win the championship in 1967, and some Cedar City fans felt their 1966 team was perhaps the strongest team up to that time in the history of their city. At the end of the tournament, Emery had placed second, Cedar City third and Uintah fourth. The team arrived in Ephraim at about 11 a.m. in a motorcade of parents and fans. There they climbed aboard a fire truck and gave impromptu speeches. Like the show Hoosiers", headlights of cars formed a continuous stream between Manti and Sterling. Even a fire truck from Mayfield guarantee a lowac xtea on our nationally known item N Tire. The team of 1966 had a classic balance to it that is often seen in championship teams quickness at the guards and forwards, good shooting and ability, and an attitude.
