Classes started on Wednesday the 25th. The students are anxious to get underway, probably because they want to hurry Spring quarter out of the way so they can get on with their summer vacation. As usual, as it is at the beginning of each quarter, it has been a hectic three days here at the institute. Everyone has been involved in registration procedures, the opening social, and forum activity. Registration At the end of this first week, have approximately 675 students enrolled in institute classes. Counting those who enroll in more than one class we have about 1050 people in our classes here. We hope that over the next two weeks these figures rise considerably higher. We are offering a variety of classes for we he young people that includes instruction in all the standard works, church history, the living Bailey prophets, dating and courtship and missionary preparation. Dance For the opening social the institute student council sponsored a dance on Wednesday evening. Loren Thompson, one ofthe council members, furnished the music and was the DJ for the dance. Around 300 students participated in the evenings activities. They all seemed to have an enjoyable time. Forum The forum speakers on Friday, March 27, .vere Clark and Laurel Christian from St. George. This year, as the Relief Society celebrates 150 years of service, even more projects are cropping up. Parks are being beautified, memorial gardens enhanced, trees and flowers are being planted. These things are delightful! While this fervor is being experienced, a remarkable s for humanitarian service opportunity honest-to-goodnes- has been acknowledged. Barbara Wood, who in a way is our own Mother Teresa, who works for Turning Point, an agency established to help displaced homemakers. She reports she is taking in, at a remarkably increased rate, individuals needingassistance in literacy. Some need to learn to read, while others need basic skills to pass GED tests. Needed, also, are individuals to teach classes to heads ofhouseholds inparenting, infant care, money management, and preparing nutritionally staple foods. Barbara states that some buy purchasing effective pizza and other non-cofoods because they know no other way. Of course, some training may be required, but much of the learning comes after a person known that someone else really st cares. Barbara is requesting volunteer clerical assistance or individuals who will gather, sort, and distribute clothing items etc. Barbara battles to bring funding to our area for education and basic human necessities, but funds are very low. She says she has hundreds of service project ideas and the people to go with the ideas. Why dont you Adopt a person and bring happiness to another human being! Margaret Allen Ephraim Prayer is part of America Our nation was formed, established and peopled by those who believed there is a God and that prayers are heard and answered. They sacrificed all they had: homes, belongings and loved ones to escape tyranny and to seek a refuge where they could worship how, when and where they pleased. Prayer was such a part of their lives that it wasnt just limited to their private lives and homes. Whenever or wherever they gathered together, prayers of supplication and gratitude were offered. Prayers were said aboard the ships that brought them to this of land. And prayers thanksgiving were given upon their safe arrival and thereafter. From the beginning of this nation when our constitution was developed with the aid of prayer for divine guidance and inspiration, men and womenhave sought the assistance of deity. They realized that it is vital and necessary in their lives and for their well being. I, and others like me, are partofthese courageous pilgrims and pioneers. They are our heritage. When I vote at the polls on election day, I vote for candidates who are religious and whom I feel will use prayer to seek solutions to national, state and civic problems and concerns. I vote to have that person represent me and my beliefs. When decisions are made concerning the elimination of prayers in our public government meetings, my vote has been cancelled. My freedom of selecting a candidate of my choicehas been revoked. I have lost a right as an American citizen and our country suffers, leaving the citizens in the hands of men, not God. Traditions and convictions of the mass are cancelled by a few who would desire the elimination of God from our society. Can we afford to let this happen? I feel that too much is at stake. Our freedom of religion is in jeopardy and all those values that our forefathers revered are lost Prayer is part ofAmerica and Americans should take part in prayer. This article was authored by Dr. Ed E. Oscarson of Vernal. As I read through the article it struck me that my wife fulfilled all the requirements of a good pet. I guess you might say that a mans wife is his best pet. the article and every time At any rate, I decided to I came to the word pet I substituted the word wife. Heres the way it read: Wives bring companionship and joy into owner s lives, especially if people are truly committed to responsible wife ownership, says Dr. Ed E. Oscarson of Vernal in announcing National Wife Week. He said, One purpose of Wife Week is to increase awareness ofthe many psychological and physiological benefits of wife ownership. However, caring properly for a wife means an owner must commit time and money, in addition to loving and caring. Dr. Oscarson said, Everyone knows that wives provide companionship. They also help ease the empty nest syndrome for senior citizens and teach youngsters about responsibility." Recent evidence suggests that wives have a therapeutic effect on the mentally and physically handicapped, and that wives make some people feel safe and secure in their homes, and that they may stimulate some people to exercise, because wives need exercise too. Dr. Oscarson said, The decision to acquire a wife must be carefully thought out, (you can say that again) and suggests considering these questions: Who will care for the wife? Will someone be home to housebreak a wife? If not, a cat or bird might be a better choice. Can you afford a wife? Besides supplying love and attention, you will need to provide food, vaccinations and health care, a license and accessories such as a leash, collar, name tag, toys and feeding dishes. "If you feel a wife belongs in your household, congratulations! You have gained the company of millions of people," said Dr. Oscarson. Well, wives really do mean a lot more than that for us owners--bthey cost a lot more than pets, too. re-re- ut $$$$ Beth says the best pet for her would be an old goat.! Do these words sound familiar? Thats not fair. Its not my fault I just forgot" It was an accident." Im not suggesting that there are not valid reasons for a child to be in some sort oftrouble. The problem occurs when we allow the excuse, valid or not, to relieve the child from having to find a solution to the situation. When we see the child as victim and ourselves as rescuer, we fail to develop the essential skills that will mean so much to that child as an adult When Jan spills her milk, when Kyle hasnt Office Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mon. thru Fri.
