Isnt it so pleiin to see how junk is treasured at this time of the year? What eui opportunity we have to show that we really do care about our neighborhood. Its often said: Dont just stand there; do something! We plead with every neighborhood in the city to rally in the cause of really taking the task of cleanup in our yards, both front and backyards, seriously. Do it now! said Spencer W. KimbalL ns THE MIRACLE OF SPRING One ofthe wonderful miracles of springis that we all get a a new beginningin so many ways, especially in our yards. As we look into the center of most blocks in our city, we see how a property owner values hisher possessions. Now that the weather has suddenly changed from winter to spring, we get a new chance to make our immediate physical world really look nice and orderly. It causes us all to feel better when takingpride in our surroundings. SETTLING SOIL Last years water project included a time frame for putting the finishing touches on it this spring. Some citizens think the city ought to be surprised that the soil in many of the trench lines has sunk, some in drastic proportions. Anyone with rience in digging-and-fillin- start pruning the fruit trees and small fruits in our yards. Keep in mind that the reasons for pruning are to: 1. Maintain the health and strength of the tree. 2. Increase the productivity ofthe plant 3. Increase the quality of the fruit Also keep in mind that pruning i s a yearly job. However, ifyouhavent pruned a tree for several years you can still after soil has been so disturbed. Next, competing BLOCK DIRECTOR TO REPORT PROBLEM AREAS Please let your Block Director know of the holes and sunken trench lines from the digging projects last year. Your Block Director will report to hisher Area Director all attention spots throughout the city. These lists then will be given to the City Administrator to give to the same contractor who is very much aware that the job is not finished until the final manicuring" is complete. Like Yogi Berra said, It aint over til its over! DO YOU KNOW YOUR DATE Last weeks article revealed that the annual Ephraim City Trash and Rubbish Pickup isfrom April 26th through 30th. Only Area 1 should have all expected pickup materials curbside on Monday, 26th. Area 2: Your trash pickup is on Tuesday, April 27th. So, by the time our city crew picks up all trash in the city on the five dates designated, system sequentially, each area will be serviced only one of the five days that week. So, Area 5, in using this system, which is your date? Yes, April 30th, the last day of pickup. Thanks for your cooperation! mature trees, long slender branches require some heading to induce branching. Trees should be kept open with considerable thinning-ou- t pruning in order to induce annual formation of g branches shouldbe removed. Now you should look for branches that have grown with a weak crotch (less than a 45 degree angle from the trunk). Then, especially ifthe tree has been growing vigorously, some branches may need to be removed to open the tree up to let sunlight into the tree. This is because many of the fruits need sunlight for maximum quality. At this point pruning the different types of fruit trees starts to differ some. For apples, you must rememberthatblossomsform and bear fruit on spurs on wood that is more than one year old. Pruning last years growth, whether tip growth of water shoots will not affect the fruit yield. A modified central leader system seems to be the preferred method of pruningpresently for apple trees. Peaches on the other hand are borne on last years growth. fruit-bearin- wood. Pear trees are trained to a modified leader with four or five main scaffold lines. Select these branches early in the life of the young tree, remove any undesirable laterals and then do very little pruning duringthe first few years. Light pruning is practiced on young or bearing pear trees because pruning may induce development of water sprouts and terminal growth. This type of growth is very susceptible to a disease called fire fast-growi- blight. For more information on pruning of the orchard, come in to theExtension Office for abook-le- t on pruning. Next week pruning of small fruits will be discussed. Ephraim Middle School News us-ingt- By Roseann Higham At 7 p.m. a concert will be presented by the Music Department. Home and School: Vital Links by LILY ESKELSEN President, Utah Education Association My parents were officially of the old school. What we looked like when we left the house re-fleeted directly upon them. We had to kneel down to show that our skirts touched the floor. And the type of pants to wear was no problem. Pants for girls at school were not allowed. And makeup, Well, that was for girls who didnt know how to pinch their cheeks and bite their lipsfor alittle extra color. (Nevermind ourcolors were black and blue cheeks and bloody lips.) My husband, Ruel, tells me that the stylish confrontations with his parents centered mainly in hair and beards. When we go older, we got bolder. A whole generation did, apparently. The revolution came, and schools allowed girls to wear pants (one year before I graduated). Boys werent sent home for trims. And being part of the generation that witnessed the wardrobe war, saw the surrender and toasted the transition, I solemnly swore, as many of us did, that when I was a parent, I would respect my childrens rights to wear what they darn well chose. Which doesnt quite explain why I had the irresistible urge to rip out my sons earwhenhe carelessly stuck an earring in it one day. Or why Tm embarrassed when my other sonbelts his pants so the crotch hangs down to his knees. Or why it bothered me the week he and his friends decided that they had to wear their shirts backwards and inside out And when I open my mouth, hear I my mothers voice saying, Dont you dare leave the house looking like that . . . when I was a kid, my parents would never stand for . . . Sanpete Valley Hospital ranks high in nation A recent national research study found that Sanpete Valley Hospital is one of the nations most highly rated hospitals. The study was conducted by Parkside Associates, Inc., a na- tional health care research firm based in Park Ridge, Illinois. The study surveyed over 56,000 former patients of 253 hospitals in 45 states, including patients treated at SVH. Patients were asked to rate various aspects of their care at the hospital. Hospitals were then ranked according to the responses ofthe patients. SVHrankednationallyinthe top 21 of U.S. hospitals in the study on an overall quality index. The index included factors such as the patients perception of medical outcome, physician and nursing care, staff courtesy, comfort, cleanliness, food and admission and discharge proce- dures. AllhospitalsoperatedinUtah by Intermountain Health Care (IHC), including SVH, were in , cluded in the study. Nationally, every IHC hospital ranked in the top 25 on the overall quality index, and seven of the top ten hospitals on the index were IHC facilities. Former patients of SVH ranked their medical outcome particularly high, giving the hospital positive marks that placed it in the top 14 of hospitals in the survey. Also ranking high was nursing care, placing in the top 16 ofthe nationwide study. "Sanpete Valley Hospital rates very high compared to other hospitals around the country," says Raymond Carey, Ph.D., president ofParkside Associates. Patients at SVH should be comforted to know the facility is rated positively for their care and services. It is a compliment to the medical staff and employees of this hospital that they are so highly ranked. when I was a national sales manager for a executive secretary. Ever since then. Ive an I had company, wondered if I should again have that luxury. I wasnt particularly thinking about that a while back when I dialed the number of an old friend and fellow publisher, Mel Baldwin, who at that time was the publisher of the Uinta County Herald in Evanston, Wyoming. Mel and his wife, Esta, e best friends and I thought it wouldbe nice to get are Once Gong ago) long-tim- together for dinner. After the first ring, a sweet, sugary voice answered. Is Mel there? I queried. Not right now, she cooed. May I take a message? To whom am I speaking?" I inquired courteously. is his executive secretary," she. replied proudly. "Gooollleee, I exclaimed. You mean he has an executive secretary?" This He surely does, and Tm it, she boasted. "May I ask your name?" I ventured. Well, I dont give out my name to just anyone Tm not just anyone. Tm Max Call and . . You - after all." mean youre that ugly printer from Manti? she asked incredulously. "No, Tm that handsome printer from Manti, and I want to speak to that ugly printer from Evanston, I countered. By the way, now that you know Tm a gentleman (all printers are gentlemen, even though ugly) what is your name?" I must have sounded convincing about the gentleman part - because she answered, Tm Maijorie." Well, Maijorie, just what does an executive secretary to an ugly printer do?" I quizzed. Warming up to me a bit, she answered, Well, I answer the telephone, write letters, and do all the other things a good executive secretary does." Knowing Mel, I said, And I'll bet that includes sweeping the floor, keeping his desk clean, washing the postum cups, sharpening the pencils and counting the paper clips." Thats right," she said. All except cleaning his desk. If I cleaned that up hed never be able to find anything. He also makes me write the stories which he is too biga coward to tackle - himself." I quickly became interested in executive secretaries, thinking that I might acquire one myself. I have a couple of stories in mind right now that Tm afraid to tackle. Just how much does he pay you?" I blurted out Thats confidential, she snorted. But he does give me a discount on my subscription. Well, that did it for me. If I was going to have to give an executive secretary a discount on a subscription, I decided I could do without So I dropped that line of questioning. "Well, I want to make a date to take Mel and Esta out to dinner, I said. Oh I know hell be interested in that He always answers all calls when hes invited to pig out," she purred. "Well, I wondered which McDonalds he wanted to go to," I informed her. Whichever one gives the biggest servings," she said boldly. And did you know that you just ended a sentence with a preposition?" Its bad enough to have an executive secretary who wont clean up your desk, but when they start correcting your grammar, thats the limit I decided to break off the conversation. After all, I was paying for the call. Well, tell him to call when he comes in." I certainly will," she responded sweetly, just as an executive secretary should. And she did (tell him), and he did (call me), and we did get together, but not at McDonalds. And it was a lovely evening. But when I asked him how come he had an executive secretary, he came right back, Well, I got tired doing all that dark room work by myself" Dark room work? Maybe I should reconsider. I really dont need an executive secretary as long as I have Beth. But watch the classified ads. If the "dark room work" increases, I may change my mind.
