Show Messenger-Enterpris- National Trails Day will be observed On June 5 America will cel- ebrate its first National Trails Day. The event will launch a new era oftrails development and new strategies for involving all trail users to do their part by joining, helping or contributing to the volunteers and professionals that maintain our trails. The National Trails Day event is scheduled in part to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment ofthe National Trails System Act and will provide an opportunity to broaden awareness of the value of the National Forest Trails. Trail organizations and outdoor recreation industries will be making a concerted effort to hold trail related events. The American Hiking Society has been coordinating these objectives for the last year. Sanpete District Ranger Thomas H. Shore said that the Forest Service is the leading provider of trail opportunities in this country, there being over 116,000 miles of trails nationwide. Also, the National Trails Day will provide an opportunity for the For est Service to show the variety of activities that trails support. Ranger Shore said that miles oftrails lack the care and maintenance needed to offer the users the quality experience they desire. Innovative ways are being used to work in partnerships with users and outdoor retailers to provide the maintenance and development that is needed to make our trails outstanding. As an example of a successful partnership, Polaris Corporation recently donated $1,000 to the Sanpete Ranger District to be used for the development of trailheadfacilities. FreedomFord of Gunnison, a Polaris Recreation Vehicle dealer, made application for the grant money and was successful in gettingit. An agreement was made with the Forest Service where the money could be used for development of the Pinchot ATV Trailhead facility. . Tt ,Xr ' In memory Page 4 Thursday, June 3, 1993 e, of ...
