We commend those of you who take the time to plant and care for a garden. Many yards seem to go to waste in these days of plenty. And more often than one may suppose, its those who need a garden more for the produce they could harvest, yet do not take the time to plant and care for one. VACANT SPACES NEED ATTENTION Ephraim City Ordinance 320-1- 0 states that all residents are responsible to keep their lots well cared for, meaning weeds andor grasses cut and clean from debris or other deleterious materials. Some residents seem to be insensitive to the problems they cause their neighbors when they neglect their lots. REASONS FOR ORDINANCE 320-1- 0 Uncut weeds andor grasses cause several problems. Let us list a few of the reasons the City of Ephraim is now going to enforce the above listed ordinance: 1) General Pride in a neatly trimmed and cared-fo- r yard gives h one an extra sense of self-wort- How much should I water is a question Im often yard? my asked. The answer is that we need to irrigate for individual circumstances, not yard or soil use. Many of us have sprinkler systems installed and we had the and contribution to the community. 2) Health should be considered. Uncut weeds produce pollen, which in turn causes Hay installer set the automatic controls to apply some water every day. The next thing we notice is that some of the plants look great while others get a pale yellow-gree- n look. Still others develop other symptoms that dont look quite right. Homeowners with these problems have called me and want me to tell them what is wrong with their plants. You are killing them with kindness, I answer. Different plants have varywater requirements. For exing next toyour home, shrubs ample, especially if they are of the juniper types, need less water than lawns. If you sprinkle petunias every day, as some dolawns, they Fever sufferers extra misery and discomfort. 3) Uncut weeds can be ahidingplaceforjunk, which may cause serious accidents to those who might be walking through that area. Rodents arid other animals may find a nesting place in junk. Even the mysterious deaths of recent New Mexico news seems to point to rodent feces as the carrier of that deadly virus. 4) Fire Danger should certainly be considered in this matter of uncut weeds or grasses. Later on in the Summer and into the Fall, when conditions become dry, it doesnt take much to start a fire. Just one carelessly thrown match or accidental spark could cause a major loss to property and expense to many. VIOLATORS WILL PAY may become very chlorotic cause of too much water. be- If you water your lawn every day it will discourage deep root growth, whereas ifyou water to a depth of8: 12 inches the roots will go deeper to obtain the water and nutrients and short periods of time without water will not be Letters will be sent out by the police department this next week to all property owners who are in violation of the City Weed Ordinance. Charges of about $30.00 per hour will be levied those who have not cut their, weeds or grasses before the 10 days given the violators of this ordinance. If the money is not paid by the person receiving the services, then this extra charge will be added to the property owners taxesfor the comingyear. Here are some answers to some questions I get asked. 1. How much water should I apply to my lawn per week? In early summer and early fall you need to apply 1 to 1.5 inches per week and in the hotter parts of summer up to 2 inches. 2. How often should I apply water to my lawn? It depends somewhat on the soil type. With the heavier clay soils many of us in Utah have, one good deep watering will do, while lighter sandy soils will require more frequent applications. In all likelihood, twice a week will be sufficient. 3. How do I know how much water I am applying to my lawn? Put out several straight-side- d cans (quart cans will do) on your lawn and run your sprinkler for 30 minutes. Then measure the depth of the water in the cans. 4. How should I irrigate trees d and shrubs? plants like trees and shrubs should be irrigated deeper and less frequently than lawns and gardens. Water should be applied around of trees in sufficient the drip-lin- e and over enough time quantities 18 inches to 2 feetor down soak to and Supplies Reduced in Price Sanpete Sheriff June Booking Report June 5: Carl E.
