Great American Smokeout set during Thanksgiving week The American Cancer Societys Great American Smokeout is an d effort to enupbeat, courage smokers to give up cigarettes for 24 hours, if only to prove to themselves that they can do it. The Great American Smokeout is held annually on the third Thursday in November. In order to prepare smokers for withdrawal symptoms and strategies for helping stop smoking, the Society offers the following information. The first three or four days when the bulk of nicotine is being eliminated will be the most difficult Symptoms will include headaches, irritability, muscle aches, and cramps, anxiety, visual disturbances, sleeping difficulties, distorted sense of time perception and intense craving for tobacco. Less common symptoms include mize weight gain. Quitters need a lot of support from the people around them. Preaching and scolding are counterproductive, so dont take that approach.
