I was nine years old. My father took me to the show that night. We were lucky enough to get seats on the aisle about six rows down from the back. The first show was nearing the end and then we would get to see sounds. The one was the melodious sound of the dong sticking the bell the magician perform. occasions and it was rung for curfew every night at nine to get the kids off the street The alarm bell had a different sound. It was a clapper that was pulled by another rope. It made a rapid staccato sound. It was a frightening sound that warned of any emergency. I think that alarm bell probably sounded more frightening to us than the sirens do today. It didnt projection booth and shooting out over the balcony. The ceiling of the theater had been covered with cloth. This was common practice those days. The cloth was used for a surface to hold paint or wall paper. The fire quickly caught on to the sagging cloth and went almost immediately to the stage where there was scenery made erf wooden frames covered with cloth were children. No one will ever know how that many people could evacuate the building under the circumstances and in that short period of time but nobody was trapped and nobody was injured. When the fire first flashed out of the projection room, my father grabbed me under his arm and didnt put me down until we were outside onthestreet By that time the flames were leaping out of the projection room windows at least fifteen feet out over tiie street. In those days the motion picture film was very flammable and if the film broke while running through the projector and happened to stop in the small aperture where the extremely hot light was shining it would ignite immediately. This night the film broke and the operator reached for the film to try to snuff the fire out but instead TT6 jerked the burning film out of tiie machine and onto the floor where other reels of fibq had been carelessly put, waiting to be 896-440- as the bell was rocked back and forth by the pulling of the rope from the hallway of the old City HalL That method was used to call the people to meetings and other special The fire fighting equipment consisted of a hose reel mounted on two buggy wheels and had a tongue so it could be drawn by hose and a couple nozzles. Our city blocks are 600 feet, this much hose wouldnt do much toward fighting a fire like the one that was raging across the street A cry went out to the other communities in the valley for help and they responded by bringing what fire fighting equipment they had. There was six businesses, seven if you count the hotel building, the fire had a good start and could very easily wipe out the whole row of buildings and perhaps the hotel Then someone had a good idea. They put a firehouse up over the drug store building and over the brick firewall. By this time the buildings from this point and north were pretty well all ablaze. There was no hope of saving these buildings but as hose arrived from the surrounding towns they were able to get mere hose lines over the roof. There was a space north of the dry good store where the creek ran by. The fire never got beyond this space. The only thing standing were the brick 0 Susan Sarandon Tommy Lee Jones S2.CUENT Elder Brandon Even Thompson has been called to the Sao Paulo The family of Jason Adam Olsen wish to take Wtx WJ1 Brazil Mission.
