And after an outstanding defensive stop at the end of the game, they still are. In a Region 12 game at Snow College on September 30, Manti Templars defeated Grantsviile the second-ranke- d 13-1- 2. The game was marked by outstanding defense, with both teams pitching shutouts in the first quarter. Manti broke in to the scoring column first on touchdown run by Steve Neeley early in the second quarter. Alan Coxs point after attempt was blocked. Manti emerged from halftime pumped with energy and enthusiasm, and it showed as Manti scored its second touchdown on a pass from Cox to Kevin Callister. This time, Alans kick sailed good through the uprights. Manti High School students chosen for Orchestra All-Sta- te Five MHS students have been chosen to participate in the 1995 All State Orchestra: (violin section) Caroline Burnham, daughter of Bruce and Elaine Burnham, Erika Frischknecht, daughter of Steve and Kathy Frischknecht, and Tori Tolley, daughter of Carol Carter and Todd Tolley; (viola section) Christy Alder, daughter of Roger and Shelly Alder, and (alternate in cello section) Juliann Wintch, daughter of Jolin and Barbara Wintch. These students were selected from individual audition tapes sent Orchestra is sponsored by in by each musician. U.M.E.A. (Utah Music Educators Association) and members of the orchestra were chosen from all over the state of Utah. The students are already in region rehearsals at Timpview High School in Provo and will be attending All-Sta- te rehearsals with the entire orchestra October 6-- 8 at West Jordan High School, Salt Lake City. The performance will be held in the Salt Lake Tabernacle the evening of October 8 in conjunction with the closing session of U.E.A. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend the marvelous musical experience. The Utah Valley Region is being directed by Ralph Laycock, retired conductor of Utah Valley Symphony and BYU Philharmonic Orchestra. The complete will be conducted by Robert Henderson, assistant conductor of the Utah Symphony. He has conducted professional and youth orchestras all over the country. In the fourth quarter, Grantsviile found the end zone on an 84 yard pass to Richard Mouritsen. The Templar defense stepped it up and denied the Cowboys their conversion try. Grantsviile had the ball on the last drive of the game, and scored on a run by Cassidy Blazard. The Cowboys went for the win, trying for a 2 point conversion But Alan Cox and Grag Jacobsen, both senior captains, combined on stopping the hard running tailback. Mantis last defensive stand was bolstered by tremendous crowd support and it helped push the eleven senior football players to a win in their final homecoming game at M.H.S. This week Manti plays Parowan on Wednesday at Snow College. Next week, the Templars, now the only undetravel to Morgan for a game with the feated team in Mayfields Jamie Stevenson gamers top spot for girls at die 12th Annual UJ.GA. Awards Banquet, held at the Fort Douglas Country Club in Salt Lake City. Pro Golfs Mike Reid, (radar on the pro tour), handled the presentation of awards, where Jamie walked away with the top award of the night for girls UJ.GA Golfer of the Year. Mr. Reid presented Jamie a beautiful victory cup trophy, with her name permanently engraved on it. Jamie will keep this trophy for a year before returning it for next years top Utah Girls Junior Player. Jamie entered ten UJ.GA events this past year. She had eight 1st place one 2nd and 1 4th, on her way to capturing Golfer of the Year. Jamies best tournament of the year was, SDI Keith Clearwater Northern Utah Junior Open. Jamie fired a 2 under par 70 at Smithfield's Birch Creek Golf Course. The 2nd day of the tournament was held at Brigham Cities Eagle Mountain, where Jamie Blistered the course at 5 under par 66 to end the tournament 7 under par. Miss Stevenson also played in two national events. The United S tates J unior Open at Great Falls, Montana, where she missed the cut for match play. In only her second national tournament ever, Jamie led the Utah Team (4 girls) in The Americas Cup" matches in Waitioloce, on the big island of Hawaii. Her first two day scores of 75, 74 left her in 4th place tie nationally. BYUs Golf Coach, Gary Howard said I congratulate you on the quality of your first two rounds. They were excellent, and maybe some of the best scores that have ever been shot by a Utah girls player, at least for two rounds. Even though Jamie struggled to 86 on the final day she still finished 16th out of 80 of the top junior girls across the nation. Jamie also participated in several regular Utah ladies events, the most notable being the Ladies Utah State Amateur, where she finished 5th. Jamie is currently playing golf on the Bountiful High Braves boys golf team on the 5 A level, based on a hardship decision. Do to the fact Gunnison Valley High , v t- . ? s Ii I r & ha- ? V 3 t! Jamie will return to Gunnison High sometime in October, after the 5 A State Golf Tournament, where she will be a senior this year. Congratulations to Jamie on a great season. She is currently being offered scholarships to Weber State and BYU, Utahs only two major schools with Ladies Golf Programs. Jamie is the daughter of Dave & Sharon Stevenson, of Mayfield, and the granddaughter of Mrs. Arilo Z Kump (Larue Y. Kump) of Gunnison, and Mrs. L. Coy Jewkes (Betty Jewkes of Richfield. She is currently staying with her Aunt & Uncle Ron and Debra Marshall (Stevenson) of Bountiful. Governor Awards Sanpete County for Centennial "Take Pride in Utah" efforts Utah Statehood Centennial Commission representatives and committee members from across the State, recently met at Brian Head to plan and exchange ideas in preparation for the States Celebration of the Century in 1996. During this annual workshop, Governor Michael O. Leavitt expressed his appreciation to the representatives from each county for their efforts in the successful, annual statewide Centennial clean-u- p program Take in Pride Utah" held May 14, 1994. Presenting each county with an award, he encouraged Centennial planners and volunteers to use the same energy to look for solutions to other problems in the Beehive state, adding that Utahs Centennial celebra tion should be a powerful tool for rekindling our fundamental values. The two day workshop provided participants with information which included raising funds, planning events and activities, marketing products, involving and inviting everyone, and communicating Utahs Centennial to the world. Miss Karen Barton of Manti chaired Take Pride In Utah" day in Sanpete County and outstanding clean-u- p work was accomplished throughout the county. Karen stated that special awards of Utah State flags will be made to nine communities and that outstanding achievement awards to flag poles for the flags will be presented to five communities. Five Manti High School have been chosen to participate in the 1995 Tori Juliann Wintch, and Erika Caroline are Pictured Tolley Burnham, Cristy Alder, Frischknecht, All-Sta-te Cast announced for upcoming play of You Can't Take It With You Ernest Larsen, Gunnison dentist, will take die lead role of Martin Vanderhof, the grandfather, in the Manti City Arts Council production of You Can't Take It With You. The cast will feature local favorites Pam Fisher, Tun Grennhalgh, Barbara Peterson, Sherron Andreason, Judy Gubler, Carl Bowers, Leslie Powell, Keith Vreeken and John Keeler. Snow College students Laura Burnham and Richard Hess will add their talents to the community project. High School students Nikki Peterson, Phil Beach, Nathan Hampton.Charity Lund, Donna Beach and Rachel Lund will join the cast Joanie Ferrin will make her stage debut in the production. The play will perform November 4, 5, 1 1 , and 12 at the Manti City Auditorium. Diane Keeler will act as the assistant director to Ivo Peterson and Kaye Roberts will serve as technical assistant. Sam Hampton and Adrian Peterson will supervise the technical crews. Ivo Peterson wishes to thank all those who auditioned for the show. There were a great number of talented people.
