Each year approximately 500,000 home fires occur in the United S tales resulting in 6,000 deaths and over 100,000 serious injuries. During 1993 there were 6,632 fires across Utah of which 1,735 occurred in single family homes that were used year round. There were 124 injuries as a resultof these 1,735 home fires and five people were killed in theirhomes. Most of these tragedies could be avoided if smoke detectors were installed and maintained properly. We find a large problem with smoke detectors is missing or dead batteries. This year as we go into the winter-firseason, when you change the wants you to make State Utah Fire Office Marshals clock, your another change: a change that could save your life. Change the battery in your smoke detector. A working smoke detector alerts you and your family during the early s tages of a fire while you have time to make a safe exit And a working, maintained smoke detector cuts your chances of dying in a home fire in half, So this October when you change your cIock...change your smoke - Temperature and Humidity in Apple Storage important A number of people have called the USU Extension Office the last week wanting to know the best way to store apples so I looked up some information on apple storage. Chemical changes take place in the ripening process of apples. This activity is called respiration. Starch changes to sugar, acid and insoluble pectins decrease and volatile gases are given off. This continues until the fruit becomes overripe and mealy. During this ripening process oxygen is consumed from the air, and water and carbon dioxide are produced and heat is generated. You may slow respiration by cooling fruit as rapidly as possible after picking. The sooner this is done the longer the fruit will keep. Most apple varieties keep best at a temperature of 30-3- 2 degrees F, however some like McIntosh and Rhode Island Greening store best at 35-3- 8 degrees F. The relative humidity should be between 85 and 88 percent For most home gardeners those temperatures are hard to attain and maintain unless arefrigerator is used. If that is not possible a storage pit or a cool storage room is the best you can do To get the humidity necessary you can wet the floor in the pit or leave an open bucket of water that will evaporate and provide some moisture. Remember in storing apples that some varieties keep longer than others and if you expect a yellow delicious apple to keep like a red delicious you are going to be disappointed. Loan funds are traditionally used by students to buy calves or lambs and fattening them for market or to put in a crop and selling the resulting harvest However, loans can be used for a variety of purposes as long as they produce sufficient income to repay the loan and provide the youth the educational experience of successfully conducting a business Loans for Youth Projects are made through FmHAs farm operating loans program. While most of the loans go for agricultural activities, Nielson said, they can be used for many other projects, including repair shops, catering services, craft sales, roadside stands, and many other enterprises. However, projects must be modest in scope and size, in keeping with school related activities. Getting the capital to start and operate a business is part of the experience, Nielson said. Our young borrowers must sign a promissory note and become personally respon-- . sible for repaying the loan with interest. They must pledge their produce liveor chattel property-includ- ing as and fixturps-stock, equipment, loan. the for security Students interested in obtaining a Youth Project Loan should contact the Fanners Hone Administration County office serving their area.
