W gift life-savi- ng A campaign has been underway for the past month to collect donations from individuals, as well as fund raisers, to help Rick Adam Simons obtain a d surgery for obesity. In just three short weeks weve raised over $4,000. Thanks to the many people who have opened their hearts and given between $10 and $500. The Simons family is deeply appreciative of the overwhelming concern people have shown. The surgical procedure costs between $11,000 and $15,000. Obesity is a killer. It is a disease of genetic predispositioa Behavior modification is seen by most people as a logical solution. However, it has been shown that weight reduction programs by themselves benefit only 5 of the morbidly obese. Only 1 will keep their weight off. Dieting is not the anmuch-neede- swer. Many morbidly obese people become reclusive. They cant do things their thinner friends and family do, such as go to a movie where they dont fit into the theater seats. School becomes very hard because getting in and out of the desks is nearly impossible. Riding bikes, walking and exercising can damage the ankle bones and cause more pain. Crossing legs, tying shoes, running, jumping and swimming are all hard to do. Surgery for obesity, called the gastric bypass, is a true miracle for the obese person as their weight comes off. They usually no longer need blood pressure medicine. Insulin levels decrease in the diabetic. But the best of all is that they experience a sort of rebirth. They overcome feelings of worthlessness and are more outgoing. Self confidence and self worth abound. Friendships blossom. Formerly sad and lonely people share moments of laughter and this time its not laughter directed at the fat person. Are these changes worth the stress of major surgery and changing long-tereating patterns? Are the side effects and possible complications worth it? These questions can only be answered by someone who knows both sides and I am one of those - have this surgery for health reasons. I did not realize the additional benefits I would experience. My personality blossomed. My confidence rose. My marriage improved. My health improved. Every aspect of my life is better because I lost the 100 pounds and have kept it off. The gastric bypass surgery is a gastric restrictive procedure. It reduces the absorption of fats, which lowers the cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It involves surgically dividing the stomach to reduce its size and limit the amount of food that can be eaten. It stops you from overeating. The patient must go for regular monthly check-up- s and follow a healthy eating program set up for himher. He is advised to walk or exercise everyday. Obesity is a surgically correctable problem. It is a permanent solution. The surgery has an extremely low rate of complications. People lose an average of 50 pounds after three months, 97 pounds the first one to two years and keep it off, only going up pounds in the next eight years. If a person needs to lose more than 100 pounds, it can take up to two years. Insurance is not available to him. They will not pay for such a procedure. Please help us give him his life back. Please give money for this 5-- 10 much-neede- d surgery. A special savings account has been set up in his name at Zions Bank in Manti. Donations can be deposited directly or given to Peggy Layton 835-031- ...
