Even though Manti had handily beaten the Bulldogs on their home court in Gunnison just a few weeks earlier, the Bulldogs arrived with a determination to beat the Templars in their own house, and By Greg Dettinger The Templars battled to a 55-4- 5 win over the Gunnison Bulldogs as they hosted them this past Friday in front of a standing-rooonly crowd. This Bulldog-Templrivalry is possibly even stronger than the m ar for the first half of the ball game it appeared as if they just might pull it off. Gunnison won the jump, quickly taking a 0 lead with Manti finally scoring their first three points after four unsuccessful trips down the floor. Tough 2-- defense and cold shooting kept the score at 2 for the first four minutes in the i st quarter of play. Both teams continued to struggle offensively as they ended the 1st quarter in a 0 tie. Gunnisons Shane Knudsen and T.J. Caldwell took the ball hard inside against Mantis big Mike Barton, placing him in early foul trouble. Shane Knudsen and Nathan King also began to hit their shots in the second quarter as they sent Manti into the locker room at half time down by the score of 27-2The Manti crowd was silent as the Templars ended the 2nd quarter. Coach Clark called for a time 10-1- Hermansen, Amber Lyons and Kristy McArthur which held the Bulldogs Jackie Jensen to a mere six points. Mantis Angie Gedge and Julie Petersen frustrated the Lady Bulldogss guards allowing them to only score a combined 4 1 points. w ith eight points from the free while going throw line. Shauna Rasmussen and Amber Lyons scored seven points each w hile Angie Gedge and Erica Templars scoring 4-- 5 Hermansen each came through with six points. Juliann Wintch and Kristy McArthur also scored four points each, as junior, Julie Petersen finished up the scoring with two points. It is the well balanced scoring attack along with a defensive press lightning-fas- t which continues to drive the Lady Templars toward a chance at a Region seeding coming up this March. Even though Mantis varsity strength primarily relies on its out, sending his Lady Templars seven seniors, this Lady Templar back onto the court in their tough program shows great promise at defensive press. Manti wrestlers post 2nd place finish in meet By Greg Dettinger Heavy snow and a 3 12 hour bus ride did not keep the Manti wrestling team from clinching a 2nd place finish at a four-teameet this past Saturday in Moab. The Templars wrestled in three m dual matches against Moab, Altamont and Cortez from Colorado. As a team, Manti outscored 9 and Moab Cortez while losing to Altamont Coach Mark Olson was very 64-1- 63-1- 56-1- 7, 5. pleased with his wrestlers and said that many individuals did very well. The following wrestlers took first place finishes in this meet: Gedeon Jarvis at 102 pounds, Jason Wendel at 160 pounds and Cody Strickland at 215 pounds. Wrestlers Gedeon Jarv is at 103 pounds, Jesse Reeves at 145 pounds. Clay Denton at 189 pounds, Cody Strickland at 215 pounds and heavyweight Brandon Olsen all pinned their North Sum- mit opponents. Junior, Cody Strickland has only lost one match this year and senior. Clay Denton continues with only two season losses as well. Coach Olson also sent his JV and 8th grade wrestlers to a dual meet against Juab in Nephi this past Saturday. Richie laics took over two matches to wrestle against Moabs Bryan Ballard in a 1st place finish and Cole Denton 1 order to preserve his eligibility for Mantis final two dual meets of the season. Tad Spencer went undefeated in three matches as well, but received a second place finish in the 171 weight class because his final match was in the 1 89 pound weight class so that Manti could avoid a forfeit maintaining Clay Dentons eligibility. Jeff Lindsay at 19 pounds, Jesse Strickland at 140 pounds, Matt Adams at 152 pounds and Brandon Olsen in the heavyweight class all took 2nd place finishes. Taking 3rd place honors were Riley Anderson at 112 pounds, Ryan Mendenhall at 125 pounds, and Jesse Reeves at 1 145 pounds. placed 2nd.
