South Sanpete, one of the poorest districts in the state, definitely needs the money right now. Ephraim Elementary was constructed 35 years ago and desperately needs more classroom space, and both Ephraim and Gunnison elementaries are in dire need of systems. Enrollment in Manti High School is 134 students over the maximum capacity and Gunnison Valley had approximately 285 middle school aged students and no middle MHS As is always the case in a situation like this, home owners are worried about their property taxes rising, but the school district maintains that there wont be a tax increase. The new homes in the area and wealthier school districts, will help pay off the bond. A pamphlet put out by the school district states, currently, the District is paying $400,000 each year in debt service payments. The board plans to combine tax rates and restructure the Districts revenue sources that will keep the tax rate constant for the life of the bond. Because the bond is such an important issue, many Manti High students are becoming involved in securing the bond. The students are discussing the issue in class, talking to friends and family members, delivering pamphlets, and urging citizens to vote. We realize that we probably wont reap the rewards, said one student. With over 600 students enrolled in a school that was built to hold 48 , overcrowding is one of the biggest problems for teachers and students. A ten classroom addition is expected to help solve this problem. The school also needs a second gymnasium for Along w ith the track construction, the football fields would be improved at each school. Other expected projects include a middle school and gym in Gunnison, and improvements at 1 the elementary schools in Ephraim and Gunnison. Though nothing is planned at Manti Elementary and Ephraim Middle School, the students at these schools would be better off in the future because of P.E. classes. Another gym would also give the athletic teams a place (Uses? improvements at the high school. The school district has said that the completion of the projects will not require a tax increase. Because South Sanpete is the poorest school district in the state, the bond issue needs to be passed for schools to have decent facilities. Citizens can cast their votes on the issue on Tuesday, February 13. Student Council plans events The Manti High School Student Council has been busy planning things. We have just finished w ith Junior w eek w hich turned out great. The enormity of the familys loss still weighed on many of us at school, even a year later. David was the oldest, and worried about how this in a I ld was holding up under what had to be extraordinary pressure to take on the man of the family responsibilities. But he did well in become better people because of them. And that its alright to turn to others to help us learn our lessons. This remarkable woman taught her children to take their pain and develop strength and re- sourcefulness and courage. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT (CDBG) PUBLIC HEARING The Six County Association of Governments will hold a public hearing to discuss the project determined to be applied for under the 1996-9- 7 CDBG Small Cities Program. The project will consist of economic development, technical assistant, community development, and planning activities for Juab, Millard, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier, and Wayne counties. Comments will be solicited on project scope, implementation, and its effects on residents. Honor students being selected By Karen Schiffman Manti High Schools annual selection process for induction into National Honor Society is beginning for this school. To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 percent. Additionally, potential members must meet high standards of leadership, service, and character. Members of the junior and senior classes who qualify will be evaluated by members of the faculty council. Leadership is based on the studentss participation in two or more community or school activities or election to an office. To meet this requirement, the student must have been active in three or more service projects in the school and community. Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty. This year 48 students will be considered for membership.
