Here attendants are (left) Amber Alder (first) and Clair Ann Munk (second). Innovative scientists (NAPSi have come up with ways people can protect themselves from mosquitoes and protect the environment at the same time. An environmentally friendly mosquito control product is now available to groups of homeowners interested in reclaiming their neighborhood from bugs. During the past ten years, it has become a popular product of choice among Mosquito Abatement Districts (MADs). Introduced by the Public Health Products Group of Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, Illinois, Bactimos' offers virtually 100 percent control of mosquitoes in the larval stage. The granules can be distributed by hand across the surface of water breeding sites. Even though Bactimos is minimally harmful, gloves should be worn. The pellets should be spread on lakes, ponds, creeks and other permanent sources of water once every one to two weeks. As the summer Sanpete Junior Princess, Jessica Brewer has her first attendant, Ashley Otten, at her left, and second attendant, Pricilla Terry, at her right. progresses, mosquitoes hatch and mature more quickly. It may take larvae as long The active ingredient in Bactimos, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, or B.t.i., is a selective larvicide. It affects the mosquito larva, causing minimal adverse effects to beneficial insects, marine life, birds, wildlife, animals, pets, vegetation or humans. B.t.i. was first isolated from a stagnant pond located in the Nahal Besor Desert river basin near Kibbutz Zeelim in the northwestern Negev Desert of Israel. The northwestern Negev is a winter rainfall desert. Since its detection, B.t.i. has been found elsewhere and has been tested by scientists all over the world. It has been found to be toxic against practically all mosquitoes. as three weeks to complete their development in the spring when temperatures are cool, to as little as four days during the warmest part of the summer. Hence, applications should be made on a weekly basis during the summer months. Temporary breeding sites require treatment following rainfalls if the site can hold water for at least five days. A 40 lb. Bactimos bag treats about one acre for one year. Extra product can be stored in a cool, dry place. If stored properly, Bactimos remains effective for at least two seasons.
