Show Home of The Mormon Miracle Pageant 1997 Dates: June 19-2- 1, Temple MANTI, UTAH 84642, THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 50 Cents VOLUME 111 NUMBER 40 Manti LDS 24-2- 8 1997 Counselors selected for Mormon Miracle Pageant presidency By Karen II. Buchanan We have been in Manti and involved in the Mormon Miracle Pageant for 25 years, and I have loved every minute of it It plays an important part in the life of my family, said D. Jay Cluff, speaking of his new responsibility as President of the Mormon Miracle Pageant. He and his counselors, Ivo Ray Peterson and David R. Willmore, are enthusiastic about the opportunities that lie ahead for them. Ivo Peterson served as counselor with previous Pageant President, douglas Dyreng. Mr. Dyreng was released as president because of his new responsibility as President of the Manti Utah Stake of the LDS Church. Ivo will serve as assistant in charge of production and David Willmore will be responsible for facilities. Mr. Willmore will soon be released as President of the Snow College Stake and will take over his new responsibilities then. Asked about any changes in the production this year, Ivo Peterson said, There are changes made in the production of the Pageant every year as new costumes are created and technical improvements made, but each year the spirit of the Pageant never changes, as it touches the lives of participants and audience. The most important change in the Pageant this year, of which the public should be aware, is the change of performance dates. The new dates are three weeks earlier than in the past, June and 24-2The June production will continue from now on. 19-2- 1, 8. President Cluff expressed the concern that word of this change will not get to everyone. He pictures, for instance, a family on vacation from Canada or the eastern United States arriving in Manti to see the Pageant in July, only to find that they are too late. We must publish the new date far and wide, by word of mouth as well as the usual means of public- ity. Everyone must tell their friends and relatives so that the scenario just described will not occur. Other changes include a new lighting system. The LDS Church Pageant Production Department will construct new lighting poles. and five 40-f- t. towers One will replace the present lighting platforms and provide not only improved lighting but better vis50-f- t. ibility because the new towers will not obstruct the view from the audience. The sound system will also be improved as the production becomes increasingly high tech. A new costume shop has been created in a vacant area of the Church Commissary Building. Mr. Peterson stated that he has been involved in costume production for many years in university and community settings in may areas of the United States and that this is the best equipped shop he has seen. The Mormon Miracle Pageant is second in overall attendance only to the Passion Play in South Dakota and this comparison is probably moot because the Passion Play has 108 performances and the Mormon Miracle Pageant is performed only eight nights. Attendance at the Pageant in Manti in 1996 was 146,000. on-sta- ge 1 1 petition. The awards were announced at the program held Thursday evening at Wayne High School April 3.
