Fundraising for the course (the original nine and the clubhouse) was done in large part by selling advance green fees; 40 rounds for $50.00. Some of those passes are 5 to 20 years old. In 1973, the water issues came to a head between the interests of agriculture irrigation in Manti and Gunnison, and the Palisade Golf Course needs. Neil Nielson of the Gunnison Irrigation Company was instrumental in cre- ating a spirit of cooperation between the concerned parties. Later in the 1980s, the park and golf course was deeded over to the state, when it was realized that the county could not continue to fund the maintenance and growth of the park. RT The recreational complex at Palisade will continue to grow, adding more camping area, new and improved hiking and biking trails, horseshoe pits, and volleyball areas. As far as Doc McGarry goes, he plays twice per week. One out of five times he ends up w ith a shot in the canyon. McGarry served on the State Parks board from 1975 on, and was involved in oversight on Palisades. Palisades is a jew el that hasnt been discovered yet. As the reputation of the 13 th hole spreads through the pro and amateur circles, the attention this jewel receives will likely continue to double. Last years attendance accounted for 13,560 rounds of golf.
