Manti then drove the ball down field where Kenny hit Joey for a TD pass. Sam McCoy kicked the PAT, Gunnison took the ball over again and on their second play hit a 38 yard pass, but two plays later Connor forced another fumble which was recovered by Mantis Cameron Hermansen. Manti again drove the ball down into Bulldog territory and was threatening to score as the 1st quarter ended. With only 43 seconds gone in the 2nd quarter Kenny and Joey article). 24-ya- rd hooked up again for a 14 yard TD strike giving the Templars a 13-- 0 lead. At the 6:33 mark in the 2nd, Kenny and Joey connected for a third time on a 7 yard TD pass, 0 giving the Templars a huge lead which they took into half 19-- time. For the second week in a row, Manti came back from half-tim- e a bit flat and with two fumbles, (one on Gunnisons own 3 yard line) and an interception, they gave Gunnison some momentum and they drove the ball back 80 yards for their first score of the game, closing to within 1 2 points, 19-In the 4th quarter, with only 1 :47 left in the game, Kenny Cox ran the ball up the middle 2 yards for the fourth Templar TD, pushing the score to 25-- 7 and Mantis second victory over Gunnison this Wide open Manti receiver hauls in Kenny Cox pass and turns it into touchdown as Templars dominate Gunnison 25-7. Badgers humiliate Bears with shutout 66-- 0 By Ken Beazer Snow College answered all questions regarding their ability to rebound from a loss by pounding Phoenix CC, mercilessly, 66-The victory put to rest any doubt as to the Badgers ability to bounce g back from their loss to Ricks College a week ear0. heart-breakin- lier. The drubbing of the Bears was swift and effective, never leaving the games outcome in doubt, as Snow College dominated all phases of the game from the start. Snow College quarterback, Fred Salanoa, got things rolling early when he connected with Johnny Tejada on a short screen pass that eventually turned into a 40 yard touchdown. Two minutes later, Salanoa found Jack Schweiger in the end zone on a six yard toss, and the route was on. Before the first quarter was over Snow College found the goal line again when running back Phillip Heywood punched a two-yar- d run across, making the score 21-- 0. The second quarter was a mirror image of the first as Salanoa tossed his third touchdown pass of the game, this one a 14 yarder to Tejada with :05 left before half. The Badger defense took care of the scoring for the remainder of the first half as Tim Suesue 1 1 recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown followed by Donovan Arp sacking Phoenixs quarterback in the end zone for a safety. Snow Colleges defense pounded the Bears offense all game long, creating nine turnovers and holding Phoenixs offense to an anemic, minus 39 yards rush- ing. The Badger defensive unit yielded a paltry 8 yards of total offense for the game, on their way to collecting their first shut-oof the season. With time running out in the first half, kicker, Scott Thompson, booted a 37 yard field goal to send the Badgers into the locker room with a 39-- lead. 1 1 ut 0 Lady Templars split games in volleyball action By Greg Dettinger The Lady Templars started off last week with a bang as they easily handled the North Summit Braves in a home game on Tuesday to increase their Region 12 record to 10-But on Thursday they had to travel to Salt Lake to play St. Marks of Rowland Hall, one of the toughest and most disciplined teams in the state where they came away with their first region loss of the year. Carrie Madsen and Haylee Maylett were the of the week. Each have been selected before, but their smart and aggressive net play led the Templars to victory on Tuesday and kept them in a close battle on Thursday even though they lost. Manti now sports a Region 1 2 record of 10-- 1 with a 10-- 2 record overall and they still lead Region 0. 2 with Rowland Hall sitting right behind them with a 2 record. Manti sits in the third ranking in state division behind Millard and San Juan. This week is UEA week and because of no school, the Templars will only play on Tuesday at Gunnison. The following week they will host Juab on Tuesday and will travel to Kamas to play South Summit on Thursday. All varsity games begin at 7 p.m. with the freshmen beginning at 5 1 9-- 2-- A p.m. Next week will end regular season play and the quarter-final- s will begin on Tuesday October 21st. As things stand now, Manti will have a first round home site advantage. The tournament will then move on to a neutral site on Friday the 24th with location and times to be announced. 7. Unfortunately for the Bears, Snow College wasnt done yet. It took the Badgers only 27 seconds into the second half before they found the pay dirt again when Kevin Curtis hauled in Salanoas fourth touchdown pass, this one from 8 yards out. Esekia Afatasi got himself involved in the scoring, carrying the ball across the goal line from one yard out to make the score 52-- 0 in favor of the Badgers. Back up quarterback. Matt Thornton, took control of the Badgers offense in the third quarter and didnt waste any time finding David Steel for an eight yard scoring strike, then ran up the middle 13 yards for a touchdown to round out the scor1 ing. The Badgers raised their record to 1 on the season and now prepare themselves to host the Warriors from Walla Walla 3-- Community College this Saturday in Badger Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Walla Walla always gives the Badgers a difficult game, and this year appears to be no different as season. Manti thus pushed their season record to 0 in region 12 and i 0 overall where they still remain I ranked in the number four spot in Estate division te - - holier-than-tho- little respect. I thought this mentality was reserved just for fans who were season team beating their just a little fearful of a beloved blue and white. But then last week I read a column in a Utah County newspaper repeating this same whiny theme. Mr. Patrick Zuke Bryson has a rather ascerbic manner in his writing anyway, so I usuallyjust have a good laugh and move on. But this time, he dissed my favorite underdog. Although I like BYU when theyre playing someone else, this time I particularly hoped that USU would give them a real battle. Anyone who attended, watched or listened to the game Friday night got their moneys worth. This was the kind of matchup that football fans really like, with an uncertain outcome up to the final seconds. Legitimate sports writers and reporters were one of the most exciting calling the game a real shoot-ou- t, match-up- s in recent memory. As the game progressed, my satyrical imagination saw beads of sweat running down Brysons face, as he watched the game from the vantage point of his knees, hands clasped in prayer... Now when a team is as unevenly matched as Snow College vs. Phoenix (Snow College restrained themselves to a score of 66 unanswered points for the game), and this continues on for six or seven years with no real contest between the schools, I can see a need to a rivalry tradition. But when USU continually serves BYU as a good humbler where BYU realizes they can take no victory for granted, BYUs administration has no reason to throw out something that works. BYU always plays a better season after a game with USU. Besides, without this rivalry, how else will BYU figure out who will replace Edwards when he retires? Manti did not have much time to prepare for the next game which was played yesterday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Snow College against the North Sevier Rams. Manti will then prepare to host the number one ranked Juab Wasps which will be played on Friday the 16th at 4 p.m. at Snow College. This game could determine the number one ranking in division 2-- and will play a major role in playoff seedings. The North Sevier game is a non league game. What good is it if you - not by a it when to my comes the or fans, particularly figureteam sports alma mater Utah State University (USU). I had such an experience when I first moved into BYU housing in 983, while a USU student doing an internship in Provo. Remember that in 1982, USU creamed BYU on the Logan field. Up until that time, USU had dominated the most number of games in the friendly rivalry. Just a few short years before, BYU managed to hire USUs football coach LaVell Edwards. BYU Athletics and university administration apparently has a tremendous respect for Utah State because they have a penchant for hiring Utah State coaches and athletics personnel. Remember LaDell Anderson? He was Utah States AD before he became AD at BYU. So when my fellow apartment dwellers started in on this attitude that BYU shouldnt have to bother with the likes of USU, I was stunned. What kind of u attitude is that for a school that hadnt even played the 1983 game yet, and had been beaten the previous season.
