He is the son of Don and Lynda Thompson of Ephraim. Garen graduated from Manti High School and Seminary this spring. He has been attending the student ward at Snow College this summer. He will be speaking in sacra- ment meeting at the Ephraim Stake Center on July 26th at 1 a.m. He will enter the Missionary Training Center on August 12th. 1 Adrian Peterson Guatemala City North Mission Adrian Peterson has been laJ respiratory challenges, potential blindness, fragile blood vessels in the brain rupturing, bowel development problems, and more. Now, at 19 months old, Chris is a happy boy, with dark blond locks and a charming smile; he is curious and a little shy around new situations as most babies his age are. Yet already, he has undergone three surgeries and has an entire team of people addressing his special needs, which he will have for the rest of his life. With hands no larger than Dr. Armstrongs thumbnail, the greatest challenge in addressing newborn Baby Chriss medical needs was in finding places to insert I.V.s; feet, ankles, wrists, arms, legs were all used on a rotating basis. Today, Chris has scars in two places where the IV was left in too long. Of all of the complications a premie, birth weight plays a direct role in survival. Babies over 1500 grams (just under four pounds) stand a much better chance than babies under 1000 grams. At 700 grains. Chris was a candidate for every 1 problem imaginable. According to Laura Winder, public relations at Primary Air vUjJ r Chris Keisel Childrens Hospital, these early babies frequently dont live long enough to get to a specialty care hospital. But once in the special neonatal intensive care unit, the odds of survival are much better than the 50 average mortality statistic. In Chriss case, the fact that he lived to arrive at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center gave him a fighting chance to survive ever) thing else. Complications started hap- pening early on; Chris had pneumonia twice in those first two months. His mother Brenda and his father Chris were not able to hold him until February 23; more than one month after his birth. I lis first taste of breast milk was on February 21, but due to Chriss special needs, they found that formula was more suitable. His first lasurgery on March 27, 1997 ser eye surgery was to attempt to correct a pioblem called ROP Michael H. Barlow New Hampshire Mission Michael H. Barlow returned from an LDS mission on July 15, 1998. He served in the New I lampshire, Manchester Mission. Michael will speak in sacrament meeting July 26 at 9 a.m. at the Ephraim Stake Center. Michael H. Barlow WEATHER for the Manti area Reported by Lee J. Anderson -- Steve Frischknecht, Manti, was elected chairman; Larry Today, Chris crawls, babbles constantly saying daddal. He experiences occasional earaches, which may eventually lead to tubes being put in his ears. For his blindness, there are already specialists from the School for the Blind and Deaf teaching Chris and his parents and guiding the family through the development process to insure the best possible outcome. Seemingly unaware of the miracle his little body has lived through, Chris cuddles close to his mother. Brenda, grateful for this precious little life, says that being Chriss mother is full-tim- e plus. Between appointments with specialists and caring for his needs, theres not much time for anything else. She does hope to have more children; an incompetent cervix, discovered as a result of Chriss early arrival will be treatable in future pregnancies, preventing or premature more miscarriages births. Adrian Peterson Returned from LDS Mission feed him in a smoothly controlled way. He immediately began gaining weight. During this whole time, he had been fed through a feeding tube anyway. The tube was finally removed a few months Retinopathy of Prematurity, especially Common in premature babies inder 1000 grams (2.2 pounds). At the same time, they repaired a hernia in his groin. Two more surgeries followed, trying to prevent a detached retina, which untreated would leave Chris no chance of being able to see. Today, blindness appears to be the primary remaining effect of his early entrance. A result of underdeveloped blood vessels in the eyes, his retina detached in spite of the surgeries. However, these fragile blood vessels were also throughout his body and in his brain, a rupture in his brain could have happened without warning a fatal condition. Another complication Chris went through was signaled by his lack of weight on gain. He was five released days later, August 28, readmitted again on September 12 and released two weeks later, then readmitted on October 23; this time they found the problem to be reflux, which caused him to immediately spit up after he was fed. They sent him home with a reflux board (a slant board with a harness to hold him in place reclined on a 60 degree angle), and a Kangaroo pump, which would week (January 17, 1997), Manti EMTs delivered a premature baby at the mothers home.
