When I was growing up in there w ere three small mom and pop grocery stores in town. In fact, my grandfather. Ernest Nielsen, ran one of these stores for 40 years. Not anymore. Times have changed forever and if Ephraim isn't progressive, we will become the museum that Sherron Andreasen wants us to be. The historic landscape at the north end of Ephraim is in serious penl. He never suggested to me that the Orem City government should protect him from this competition. Instead he promised me better service. Perhaps there is hope for our local businesses as well. I firmly believe that Ephraim can become an important retail center" and still maintain a small town atmosphere. It is not the job of those of us who hav e elected to stay in Ephraim and raise our families, to preserve the town for those who moved away. It might be different than you remember when you return. Get over it. The best way to honor our pioneer ancestors is to look forward. That's what they would have done. Vance E. Larsen While gives job opportunity for students and local people. 7. Wal-Mar- rt Repeal the Zoning Ordinance To the Editor: There has been some concern expressed by residents of Sanpete County concerning the possible failure of local businesses because t. of the future opening of Business failure is a concern but any local failures will not be due t, believe it or not. but to w ill be due to the present Sanpete County Commission. Why is this so? Simple. There are presently six pharmacies in Sanpete County. New Wal-Mastores generally also contain a pharmacy. In order to keep all the pharmacies in business they all need customers and a customer base. The bigger the customer base the more customers are available for each store. Generally as one ages one uses the pharmacy more and more so the biggest customer base of a pharmacy is the older age group. I low-e- v cr. the present County Commission has recently passed a planning and zoning ordinance which prohibits older people from remaining in Sanpete County or from moving into the county thereby halting and even removing the customer base for the existing pharmacies and the possible new one which will put one or more pharmacies out of business. The County Commission is also considering a subdivision ordinance which will make it unlawful for new customers to move into or remain in the county as our children grow older thereby again lowering the customer base. As for the candidates for the commission I do not know what Mr. Blachams iews are concerning the ordinances but Mr. Alder, at the last public hearing on the subdivision ordinance, indicated that he would enforce it. You can tell what my views are. I would urge every person in Sanpete County to call Eddie Cox. Bob and Keller Besscy Christenson and each candidate and tell them that you want to give each present business a fighting chance to stay in business in the county. Urge them to repeal the Planning and Zoning Ordinance and to not pass the Subdiv ision Ordinance. Also call the County Clerk's Office and leave a message for the commissioners that they should repeal the Zoning Ordinance and vote the Subdivision Ordinance down. Do it today! Tomorrow your neighbor may be out of business.
