Show Thursday, November 5, 1998 Investing For Growth Opportunities ? Consider Small Cap Stocks (NAPS) Some call them the Davids who have beaten the Goliaths. Who are these potential little heroes and where does one find them? Small cap stocks are securities issued by small cap companies, those firms usually found in the most dynamic sectors of the economy. These companies typically have a market capitalization of one billion dollars or less. Experts at Federated Investors point out that a small cap mutual fund diversifies your money among stocks of many small companies and can provide you with more diversification than you could typically afford as a single investor. Although small cap stocks are .more volatile than large caps, the two markets tend to move independently, so a small cap fund may help reduce the overall volatility of your portfolio those worrisome fluctuations in value while increasing your return potential the reason behind long-ter- investing. Many investors are attracted to small cap stocks because, historically, they have provided returns greater than large cap stock. In the 33 years from 1964 to 1997, they noticed a 13.9 percent compounded annual return vs. 10.9 percent for large caps (Source: Prudential Securities: CRSP, University of Chicago). Of course, past performance does not guarantee future results. Consumer Alert! technology consumers can use to entertain, educate and interact with each other. Fortunately, however, some legislators have come up with what many analysts consider better bills that actually encourage new technology and protect consumers rights. The new proposals, sponsored by Sen. Johri Ashcroft (S.1146) and Reps. Rick Boucher and Tom Campbell (H.R. 3048) would, like proposals supported by the Clinton Administration, implement international copyright treaties. The With a lower capital gains tax pending, investors are more likely to invest in small cap companies through mutual funds. Another plus for small caps: An impending tax law change lowers taxes of these companies generally on capital gains. This favors small cap stocks because most of the returns come in the form of capital gains. Ashcroft 1066 SO 0UR I TL . (ABC") bills would not, however, threaten new technology and consumer products as the Clinton Administration's bill would. The ABC bills meet all treaty requirements, yet protect the consumers fair use of home recording equipment. The bills target illegal conduct which would harm the creators and owners of copyrighted artistic works rather than stifling advances in consumer electronics technology that would create lucrative new markets for that art, report the experts at the Home Recording Rights Coalition.
