They shook hands, seemed sincerely interested in hearing our comments and opinions and stayed for nearly 45 minutes. In fact it was our suggestion, not Senator Hatchs, when we felt we had taken as much of his time as vve deserved. The first words he said were, Hello Max. I picked up on the informality and said Hello Orrin. He then gave me a big hug. After the introductions (I had met Sen. Hatch several times previously, but this was the first time 1 had met Elaine), he offered to stay and visit as long as we wanted. We went into my office, which Im sure was quite inadequate compared to his), and just talked friend to friend. He never ducked a question -and I liked all the answers. I told him that I (and most other Utahns) were pleased with the role he had played in the recent Clinton fiasco. He was modest about accepting the compl iment, and even expanded on some of the comments he made on the Larry King Live show last week. I showed him one of my recent columns, which he dutifully read. He even chuckled a time or two and was sure that Elaine would enjoy it also. I pointed out the comment I made about my feelings about Bill Clinton. 1 le agreed, but was conciliatory and said that he hoped they could work together for the good of the country. We talked a bit about repentance and our religious con- cepts of forgiveness. I urged him to make a run for the presidency. pointed out that thought that after the backlash over the impeachment matter had settled, the American people would be much more inclined to select a man for the next president (or woman) who had an impeccable moral character and could be believed as telling the truth. I told him I (and many others) felt that he admirably fulfilled that requirement. He didnt say no and I think that if enough of his friends him to take the he will more seriously consider that urge step possibility. He did say however, that he intended to run for to his senate seat. After 45 minutes his Press Secretary, Paul Smith, began to get a bit fidgety, so I opened the way for him to end the interview, although I had the impression he would have talked as long as I wanted. I couldn't help thinking, however, how nice it would be to be on a first name basis with the President of the United States. When I had dinner with President Reagan, he said Hello Max, and replied. Hello Ronnie. But I question if that was really on a first name basis. With Orrin Hatch it really would be. He is truly a fascinating and pleasant person with whom to talk. Good luck. Senator. You certainly have my vote if you decide to run for President.
