Show Thursday, August 5, 1999 Messenger-Enterpris- J : The rural Utah myth Perseids meteor shower will be next week By Beverly Call It never ceases to amaze me what ideas many people have about life in rural Utah. In fact, people across the country have some whoppers about the entire state! Two years ago, my family and I took a trip back east where I met a woman who was convinced that Utah was one big Amish community. Squaring my shoulders, I effected my best woman-of-th- e world attitude and explained that I was from Utah. Immediately she began to chatter on about how she couldnt understand why I would want to share my husband with all those other wives and then asked how we could possibly care for ...all those children. Well, being the kind of person that I am I just couldnt let her outburst go. I looked at the woman very soberly and said, is With your tax dollars of course. Didnt you know that and walked away thinking, Chew on that Danish for Wiggins. Under normal circumstances, observers away from city lights and smog are usually able to count 50 or more Perseids per hour. Unfortunately, cautioned Wiggins, this years shower is predicted to peak during daylight hours on Thursday the 2th so the number of meteors we in the west get to see may be somewhat dimin- girlfriend. There are people actually living right here in Utah who think of the space between Utah County and Dixie as the great black void. Ask them what towns lie between Payson and Cedar City and theyll look at you blankly and say, I dont understand the ished. Fortunately, the number of meteors seen during the predawn hours of the 12th could still be very impressive, w ith abov e average numbers of meteors possibly being visible a couple of nights before and after the peak. These meteors are called the Perseids because they appear to radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus. Optical aids such as telescopes or binoculars should not be used for viewing this or any meteor shower as such instruments only restrict the observer's v ievv. The naked eye is the best device for viewing meteor showers. Often called shooting stars or falling stars, meteors are actually tiny bits of rock, most no larger than a grain of sand. Perseids meteors strike the upper atmosphere of the Earth at speeds of around 60 km'sec (40 misec) and bum up because of air friction at an altitude of 90 to 0 kilometers (55 to 70 miles). , Most meteor particles are thought to have been left behind by comets. The comet associated with the Perseids is SwiftTuttle (named for its discovers) which w as last closest to the Sun in 992 and which is now headed outbound into deep interplanetary m 1 1 lips. All three sat in stunned silence. I let them worry for a minute before admitting that the kids in Sanpete County were indeed blessed with all the modem conveniences essential to life -l- oud rock music, color TV and even a movie theater that plays the latest talkies. Later, when I was a student at Snow College, Janetta fixed me up with a blind date from Midvale. As soon as I was introduced as Bev - from Sanpete County I knew I was in for a big helping of his ego as he set out to impress this poor country Jenny Lyon displays the 60 books which she has compiled as a collection of valuable memories. I hear the old timers in Salt Lake City call this area the Utah Triangle. If you ever wander into it, they say with foreboding in their voice, youll never come out. I moved here from the city when I was 15. Leaving my friends and the city social life was a devastating blow to my blossoming teenage years, to say the least. I was sure that my life would be reduced to farm chores and bam dances. As it turned out, I made some really great friends (one of whom I married five years later) and not once did I ever have to slop a pig or dance in a bam. A month after moving here I took a trip to visit my old friends. When I arrived, Janette, Sherri and Lori rushed up to me, crushed me in a group hug, and began patting my hands and shoulders as of which they if to console me for the dismal abyss of Hick-dothought I was a prisoner. As we ate our lunch at the mall, Janetta, in a fit of emotional concern, grasped my hands in hers, and solemnly asked, What kind of music do they listen to down there, I mean, do you get radio stations? Then Sherri jumped in with, Yeah, do you even have TV? I couldnt believe what I was hearing. They actually thought that I had moved to a third world country that was only a couple of hours away from Salt Lake City! Recovering from my initial shock I related the whole horrible story. Wah of bourse we have a TV, I said in my very best backwoods accent. The only wun in town sits in the winda of Simmons Store. The performance was breathtaking, but Bill insisted on explaining the story line to me throughout the entire ballet. Afterwards we went for an elegant carriage ride.
