Get back to phonics To the Editor: I have read with great interest all the letters from teaehers. 1 have noticed that they are all dedicated, hardworking, caring people. Then I look at the test scores of the children in most schools and see that many of the scores are below the fifty percentile mark. It just doesn't add up. These teachers care. What is the problem? Then it hit me. Teachers are not being given the correct tools to work with. In 1963, we were a nation that was headed for the stars. Our SAT scores were brilliant. Then there was something introduced into education. It was called the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It Hooded schools with massive federal funds. It opened the doors and pushed forward many psychological and psychiatric programs which continue to this day. Our SATs started dwindling from that point on. Money for these programs has gone up from that point, also, yet the product is worse. They are being required to teach from programs that don't Every type of education reeducate the children. I learned many things during the 13 years that I served. I wouldnt want to repeat the performance, but I am grateful for the maturity that being in the service gave me. One of the real pluses was making lots of lifetime friends from all over the country. I learned a few things from each of them, and 1 still consider them close friends. One day I was walking down the street with a buddy from New York, when for some unknown reason a bird nearby starting chirping. My friend said, Did you hear that boid? Wanting to chide him a bit for his strange pronunciation, I replied, Thats not a boid: its a bird! Well, it sure choips like a boid, he replied. Some of my best friendships were developed while in the army. Which reminds me that recently I received a letter from a man who served at the same time I did. In fact we even served in the Aleutians at the same time, although I never knew him. He wrote the letter and addressed it to the Ephraim Gazette, Fillmore, Utah. With all due credit to the Postal Service, somehow I got the letter, even though it first went to Fillmore. What the writer, James M Stewart of Montesano, Washington, wanted was to find an old buddy with whom he served, who was from Ephraim. The name of the lost buddy was Lt. j.g. Peter K. Peterson, who served on a Navy patrol vessel in the Aleutians. He said that both he and Peter K. Peterson were lawif he is still yers, and he would surely like to find him again alive. The reason he remembered that Mr. Peterson was from Ephraim was that he received the Ephraim local paper, undoubtedly the Enterprise. I promised him that I would put the name in my paper and ask if anyone in Ephraim could shed any light on Mr. Peter K. Peterson. I told him that there were originally lots of Petersons, and, according to Grace Johnson, several of them were Peter Petersons, but that perhaps someone w'ould remember him. If any of you Ephraim readers, or anyone else, can remember him, or knows anything about Mr. Peter K. Peterson, who was admitted to the bar in Utah about 942, please let me know so I can tell Mr. Stewart about him. 1 1 About middle age: A man has reached middle age when he is cautioned to slow down by his doctor instead of by the police. Middle age is having a choice of two temptations and choosthe one that will get you home earlier. ing You know youre into middle age when you realize that caution is the only thing you care to exercise. I dont date women my age. There arent any. (Milton Berle) Don't worry about temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you. The trouble with life is, by the time you can read a girl like a book, your library card has expired. I have everything I had 20 years ago, only its all a little bit lower. (Gypsy Rose Lee).
