Page 7 e Local citizens object to Forest Service plan Last January the Forest Service initiated a moratorium on Forest Serv ice road building, and asked for public input on the proposal. The initiative came from the Clinton administration, and was enthusiastically endorsed by environmentalists. The Forest Service recently held open houses to discuss the closures. As the deadline for that input neared, County Commission Chairman, Bob Bessey, studied the maps and made his comments on a radio broadcast and made the following statement: nary water for our valley towns and need maintenance. We have millions of board "The residents of Sanpete merits. Forest Service personnel will not be able to manage the land County and the Sanpete County Commissioners are opposed to the prohibition of any access to any areas of the forest that currently have a roadless designation. Almost all of the areas that are presently considered roadless in Manti LaSal Forest have a huge impact on the economy, custom and culture of the residents of our rural towns on both sides of the mountain range. We believe that multiple use is the highest and best use of the resources, and a roadless designation will obviously prohibit that. A number of reasons to support our positions are summarized here: Many springs provide culi- - timber that feet of beetle-infeste- d need to be harvested and the area reforested. There are a large number of parcels of private land that are within the forest areas that need access. There are hundreds of sheep and cattle allotments that require access for management and main- tenance. Every project on the forest should be determined on its own properly. Through the multiple use and management by the forest personnel the forest is in better shape now than it was 30 years ago. If the plan were to be initiated, Bessey said, it would close the present roads in the top of the mountains in Sanpete County. In Mr. Besseys comments he invited comments to be sent in to CAET United States Forest Service, co Roadless, P.O. Box 221090, Salt Lake City, UT 84116. Bessey said that a large and number of letters, Faxes had been sent to him and the County, all of whom were opposed to the plan. I requested an extension to the time available for public comment, he said. I don't know if that will happen or not, he added. tefc-o- ff ,)ce.
