Polka Express Convention business increases in Weber County Republican Convention, tourism conference on tap The State Republican Convention will be held at the Weber County Fairgrounds June 26-27, announced Cindy Williams, events director. “Mystaff has secured the needed overnight accommodations at our Ogdenhotels and motels,” said Williams, “and we are now making plans to host the convention.” Although the convention has always been held in Salt Lake City, Ogden wasconsidered this year by the committee becauseit is the metropolitan center of the first congressionaldistrict. Thefirst congressional district received the highest percen- tage of Republican votes in the state during the last election. Robert Montgomery, chair- man of the Weber County Republicans, said his organi- zation had pushed for that decision because “we have such fine facility we wanted to showoff to the rest of the state and it is very amenable to the needs of the convention.” General sessions will be held in the Golden Spike Arena with break-out sessions, candidate booths, lob- bying and voting conducted in the Exhibit Hall. Locating the convention in Ogden will also give the Republican candidates good exposure to the voters in the first congressionaldistrict. Several important nominations will be madeat the convention, principally those for governor, senator and congressman. Then the nominees will be voted on and any not receiving 70 percent of the vote will run in a state primary election. Tourism conference Weber Countyhas also won the bid to host the 1993 Governor’s Conference on Tourism, April 26-28. It has been eight years since the return of this conference to a Northern Utah community. Holly Robb, cooperative projects director for the Utah Travel Council, credits the success to the bid itself which was prepared by the Chamber’s Convention/ Visitor Bureau. Shelleice Stokes, conference bidder for the CVB, says the approach was to propose various activities and fa- cilities centering around Weber County's heritage. The conference will be enhanced bythe cooperative efforts of the Forest Service, Union Station, Utah Depart- ment of Transportation, Ogden City, Weber County Fairgrounds, the Northern Utah Lodging Association anc others in the tourist trade industry. The 1991 conference in St. George saw more than 800 participants. Both the Ogden Park Hotel and Radisson Suite Hotel rooms will be utilized. |
