Show 2C Sunday, March 22, 1992 Standard-Examiner- LOCAL Juveniles suspected in tree killing:- Crosswalk laws are specific By DON BAKER Standard-Examiner staff You makethecall: Approaching a mid-block pedestrian crossing, you notice a car has already stopped in the inside lane for a pedestrian who hasjust reached the center of the street. It’s going to take a few seconds for the pedestrian to get to your lane, so you (pick one): A. Romp on the gas and shoot past the crosswalk before the pedestrian gets to your jane? B. Come to a stop? C. Honk your hornto let the pedestrian know you have the right of way, then continue cautiously through the crosswalk? If you marked anything but ‘B,’ according to Ogden Police Lt. Chuck Buzick, you’re a prime candidate for a traffic citation — and maybe even serious autopedestrian accident. Buzick, who has compiled a collecuon of “little-known traffic laws that everyone ought to know,” said the law applies to both marked and unmarked crosswalks. When one vehicle has already stopped at any crosswalk, the lieutenant said, “the operator of any other vehicle approaching from the rear may not overtake and pass the stopped vehicle.” One problem is that someone else could be in the crosswalk in front of the stopped car, ready to step into your lane, but the car is blocking your view. Prudence, regard for pedestrian safety and the Utah Code require you to stop your car. Buzick also said the law puts some responsi- bility for safe crossings on pedestans. “A pedestrian maynot suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard,” he said.
