Ken is one of the truly “life long” residents of Roy, and his contributions have been instrumental in making Roythe high quality communityit is today. Ken was born in 1918 on the same property on which he is now living. When Ken was young, his father was struck with polio which left him crippled and later discovered that he had Parkinson’s disease. Because of his father’s increasing incapacities, Ken worked the farm at a very early age and continued even after his father’s death into his adult life. During the depression years in Roy, the Russell’s had a home- Kenneth Wayne Russell based band that furnished free music every Fridaynight at the Roy Ward dances, which was a great benefit to the community since entertainment was scare in those days. Ken married in 1944 and moved onto a piece of the Russell property. There he raised six children, three of which are now living with their own families on part of the original farm. Amonghis posterity, he counts 23 grandchildren, most of whom live adjacent to Ken. Along with his wife, Ken has served as a surrogate parent to all of his grandchildren, as their mothers and fathers worked. Ken’s home was the gathering place for all the grandchildren, especially at breakfast, and he would walk each little one to and from school each day. In October 1974, Ken’s wife, Lelia, fell victim to cancer. After four months of hospitalization, she returned home almosta total invalid. As the disease prog- ressed, she was unable to administer to her own physical needs. ‘Ken cooked, cleaned, nursed and moved Lelia physically until her death last year. Ken’s most contribution employment came when he became Roy’s first and only deputy under Police Chief Art Swenson, and then under Amasa Baker. He spent 28 years in the Roy Police Department, serving most of those years under Chief Julian Green. Ken retired as a captain in 1980. During Ken’s service in the police department and underChief Green’s leadership, the Roy Police Department was rated the best of all small community departments in the state of Utah. Thank you Ken for your contribution to the city of Roy and the community. 1992 Roy Days Heritage Queen Melba K. Arave was chosen to be the 1992 Heritage Queen of the Roy Days celebration.
