It’s where the earliest US. satellites and manned space capsules were launched (and where TY’s Larry Hagman. as astronaut Tony Nelson, was based in the ‘60s sitcom J Dream ofJeannie). The wonder of a spectacular tomorrow still pervades the air at Spaceport USA at Kennedy Space Center, just north of the original launching pads on the cape. This is Our most impressive government- run attraction, a veritable theme park where double-decker buses take you to a real lunar landing craft on a simulated moonscape. It was from this peninsula that Alan Shepard sailed upward atop the Redstone rocket in 1961 to become the first non-Russki in space. You can walk through a space station of the future, and animatronic effects will make you think you're in orbit. In the Gallery of Spaceilight, you'll see a moon rock and spacesuits, and in the Rocket Garden there’s usually a shuttle replica to walk through. The Astronauts Memorial. for the 14 men and women whodidn't come back,is a mirror that tracks the sun and makes the heroes’ names appear to hover in space. Film presentations include an IMAX movie with six-track sound that shakes your brain. To feel the vibrations of a real shuttle launch. the place to be is Jetty Park, with barbecue facilities and restrooms. at the eastern tip of Port Canay- eral.
