Show OF COAL IS FROM C CARBON AR Y 0 U T COUNTY cu UN ry ivr THE MOST C figures from the state mine aine inspector are interesting Shrin shrinkage lage in mining and smelting for the ear 1908 is strikingly shown in the figures of the coal output of the he state for the year the shrinkage a g e is still mure more strikingly shown in th the e production of coke so extensively used in the smelters shelters sm elters outside of the loss due to the falling failing off in mining and smelting smelling sm elting the showing for the year is a good one because u coal must be had for ordinary purposes be the times good or bad in a way the closing down of the amel and mines proved a ble blessing tsing to the small consumer it enabled the coal producers to fill all orders promptly so go that there was not even an echo this 3 ear of the coal famine that caused such inconvenience in the preceding year the ordinary consumers consumer as benefited in another way this was in the reduction of the price in pi 1907 the price of wyoming coal went to while the utah coal sold for 6 00 this year the uniform price of prevails the independent companies aside from the kenilworth coal company the cd independent coal companies from which so go m much itch was expected cut but little figure in supplying the demand for in 1903 of the total production of tons this year tons were ere produced in carbon county of the small balance tons were produced in summit county and the statement nt that the utah fuel company produced 1500 1 tons or five sixths of the t tal 0 output of the near car shows that the independent companies have still much to do to meet it ta li l i demand in competition with the older company the kenilworth mine owned and operated by the independent coal company made good progress during the thecae th bear ecar it ia is working a foot vein and is now turning out from seven even to eight hundred tons of coa coal each day the consol fuel company is building a line of railroad to connect its miller 93 given ven above which practically tell creek coal property with the denver and rio grande at price ce it promises to be in the marlet arlet with coal during the coming coining year considerable ot of the eighteen miles of the road have been graded and work is still going forward the weber and summit county mines turned out the usual amount of coal during the year the union pacific coal company at scofield lias bas produced an average of fifteen to eighteen hundred tons daily during most of the ear 1908 although there was a short shutdown during the summer on account of the burning of tipples and outside improvements fuel mines all the mines of the utah fuel company at ut the various points in in carbon county are in first class physical condition at the close of the year there were no labor troubles of any kind in 1908 the men submitted to a cut in their wages as the result of the panic and the decreased demand for coal and coke but while there was a distinct falling failing off in the total amount of business done the total of paid by this company in wages and salaries makes a good showing it compares well with any previous year with the single exception of 1907 which was thu the banner year for the company it will be noted from the figures 4 www IT 41 44 N ito 41 17 ah 4 t 4 0 7 4 T 4 4 4 t tt t 44 4 4 44 4 44 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 UTAH FUEL MINE AT WINTER QUARTERS the whole coal story for the year that the importation of coal from wyoming shows a marked falling oft off as well as does the output of utah it is worthy of note also that of the total importation import ution tons 0 or r practically two thirds of the total aas used by the I 1 companies the exportation of coal to other states is trifling and is made up largely I of gas coal outlook for I 1 future coal producers take an optimistic view of the future they realize of course that the demand for the cut gut put of their mines and cole cot ovens depends largely upon the resumption of mining and smelting on the liberal scale of previous years and they are counting on this they argue that with the blowing over of the panic and the depression and with the increase in the prices of the precious metals soon to follow there will be a quick resumption of smelt ing and a corresponding demand for coal and coke the mines ae are all reported in good condition the laws are carefully cure fully complied with and every precaution is 1 3 taken to safeguard life and property the falling off in the demand for coal in 1908 enabled the companies to do much valuable development work bo u that now they are ready on bhart notice to roll out a great tonnage and meet all reasonable demands made upon them the state auditors office has ac cumulated statistics on the prices of coal per short ton at the mines which though not brought down to date are still instructive they show that the prices are higher in utah than that in either colorado or wyoming and that in utah they are inc increasing rather than diminishing under the influence of modern betl methods odson of mining and the increase increase of 0 the larger output here arc are the figures 1602 1002 1003 1903 ions
