Home smoke detectors are available in models which use house current or batteries. The location of a smoke detector is crucial. Detectors should be placed as close as possible to bedrooms, and also in the path along which smoke would flow, In single floor homes, this usually is in a hallway off which the bedrooms open. In a house with upstairs bedrooms, the unit should be near the top of the stairs. A detector should be installed in the center of the ceiling, or it can also be installed on walls between 6 and 12 inches below the ceiling, away from accidental bumps and childrens reach. The unit should never be placed within six inches of where the wall and ceiling meet, since this a dead air space with poor circulation of air and possible smoke.
