JaK Ducks Free-Floatin- g Mall Sculpture a Challenge LAYTON g A duck sculpture above in the center of Layton Hills Mall was a free-floatin- the fountain challenging and enjoyable project for Utah artist Dennis Smith. . Smith, an Alpine, Utah, native, said he enjoyed making the bronze sculpture for the mall because' it was a flying type design. I enjoy getting , I enjoy getting things in the air, he said. Getting g a piece was really exciting. g bronze Smith is currently designing a terminal at the entrance to a new for the sculpture Salt Lake International Airport, which he said will have airplane type designs. , He said the challenge to the Layton Hills Mall sculpture was sizing the design to fit the open space above the fountains. He said they had trouble gauging it during the casting process so it would not look too big or small for the area. The sculpture is made up of 18 ducks in flight, They are divided into three groups and appear to be landing in the fountain below them, Smith said it took about six to eight months to complete the 1,800 pound sculpture. He said the idea free-floatin- g, , free-floatin- free-floatin- for the design came from a picture of another sculpture with birds in flight which he had designed. Dave Horn, one of the owners and developers of Layton Hills Mall, contacted Smith about doing a sculpture for the mall and when he saw the birds in flight design he thought it would fit the area, Smith said. Horn said he felt the ducks were a good choice because they are common in the Davis County area. He said they also felt ducks would go well with the theme of water. The process of making a bronze sculpture involves many steps, Smith said. He starts with a clay model, which he designs. From the models he rfiakes the wax molds and finally takes them to be cast in bronze. The bronze casting is done at Wasatch Bronze Works, Lehi, Utah. Smith said they have handled most of his bronze work for the last few years. He said the molds used for casting the sculptures are still in existance but the clay models have been destroyed: He said it would be very difficult to reproduce an exact replica of the sculpture, even if the same molds were used. Bank Buildings Under Construction LAYTON Under construction near the Layton Hills Mall are two banks which currently are being operated from temporary headquarters in trailers while their permanent structures are being built. The building which will house the Second National Bank of Layton is near completion and is expected to open near the middle of January. Dorothy Weathers, a cashier at the bank, said the Second National Bank of Layton has been operating out of a trailer near its Layton Hills Mall location since June 16, 1980. She said the bank, which has been open for business in Layton since 1973, is to the mall. The Second National Bank is locally owned and has assets of over $4 million, Mrs. Weathers said. Recently started near the mall is the building which will house Empire State Bank of Layton, which is a new bank to the area. Kent A. Webb, executive of Empire State Bank, said the new bank, which has also been operating out of a trailer, has built up $2 million in assets since its Sept. 17, 1980, opening. He said the Empire State Bank of Laytons building was recently started and he expects that it will be SWEATERS Wool & REG. HOVERING over the central area of the Layton Hills Mall is a flock of ducks sculpted in bronze. The ducks are modeled after the MEN'S occupied in May, 1981. Webb said the architecture of the Empire State Bank building will be unique. It will be exposed concrete with wood, he said. Itll be a different style than anything else at the mall. The Empire State Bank is being designed for future expansion which Webb said will include the addition of office space for professional practices, i The controlling interests in Empire State Bank of Layton are owned by HOMCO Investment Company which is the company that developed the mall. He said Empire State will offer customers free checking accounts and will also be participating in the interest bearing checking accounts, which will carry a service charge he added. The Empire State Bank of Layton is a sister bank to the Empire State Bank of Salt Lake City. Webb said he is pleased with the location of the Layton bank at the mall and said if a feasibility study had been conducted he is sure the choice of location would have been the same. He said the area is a good place to be because of the growth potential in the Davis County area and the central location between the two major metropolitan centers in Ogden and Salt Lake City.
