The environmental assessment w ill lx1 available for y public review for a public comment period from March 5 through March lit. The Faster Jeep Safari haslxrn an annual event since llMiti. Initially organized by the Moab Chamber of ( 'ommeree. the event has Ixvn managed by the Red Rock jeep club since 1985. Over a nine-da- y periixl at Faster, for the Safari, and during Faltor Day weekend for tin Fall Campout, club members lead participants over established vehicle routes. The Red Rock heelers have applied to renew the permit for the events for an additional five-yeterm. The application proposes continued use of 30 popular 1 camp- the in Campout. Participation events has remained relatively level over the past five years. Manager Wyatt noted that "BLM has approved these events through a series of environmental documents and permits over the years. 1999 have wilderness characteristics. Also, some comments expressed concern about the large number of vehicles on routes during Moab's busy Faster week, w hether or not they participate in the .Jeep Safari, stated manager Wyatt. Several of the routes proposed for continued use for the Jeep Safari pass through or are adjacent to areas with wilderness characteristics. Our past monitoring of the events shows that Safari and Camjxnit participants are very care-fu- l to limit their travel to established vehicle routes, explained and changed conditions. The first comment peril x! helped us fix'usouranulysison the remaining issues concerning the events, stated Wyatt. The public can now' look at our expanded amdysis in the new environmental assessment which builds ujxn our past efforts. Issues included for additional detailed amdysis in the environmental assessment are: impacts to riparian areas, water quality, soil resources, and cumulative impacts. The new analysis adds to that developed through multiple generations of past .Jeep Safari env ironmental assessments. While a large majority of the comment letters submitted during the first comment XTiixl expressed support for the ev ents, others were concerned about the potential impacts to areas that RFM found to ay ar routes and I guidelxxiks and maps. As part of processing the permit application, RFM invited the public to submit know ledge about any issues not adequately addressed in the previous environmental assessment covering the events during a 30-dcomment period held in November-December of 2000. RFM received 220 comments from the public and considered issues raised during the development of the new 15-da- 01 IV ness characteristics pro- poses activities very similar to those of past y ears. As before, the Safari and Campout would utilize established routes that are all ojxn to genera public use. Most of these routes arc deserilx-- in commercial permit Wyatt. Wyatt further noted that BLM has been working to provide improved camping and trailhead facilities in the Moab area and has installed many new signs to help better manage visitor use. We reeently implemented tighter rules on v ehicle travel and camping which have been very well received by the public. We expect that these actions, in addition to our Trails Not Tracks information campaign, which is designed to encourage responsible trail use, should help reduce negative impacts to the public lands from visitors not participating in regulated events.
