Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday April 17,2001 7A CHOOLS Emery High students named Sterling Scholars The Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholars held its competition on March 27, at the College of Eastern Utah. Four Emery High School stu- dents were named as Sterling Scholar winners and six were named as Runners-U- p. The Sterling Scholar program of Southeastern Utah allows high school students to compete in twelve different academic areas against students from the eight high schools in Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan counties. The competition involves creating a portfolio of student accomplishments in the selected areas and an interview with three judges. Students work all year longto prepare for this competition. Winning from Emery High were Jayna Peacock, Donnalee Day, Trista Pabst, and .Jayna Peacock Leslie Nelson. Jayna Peacock placed first in the SpeechDrama category'. Jayna is the daughter of Neal and Gw en Peacock of Castle Dale. She has been active in Speech and Drama for the past four years and recently placed 2nd in State in Oratory at the 3-- A State Speech Tournament. She starred as Adelaide in Emery Highs production of Guys and Dolls and was Lucy in Youre A Good Man Charlie Brown. Part of her interview was performing a musical selection from Guys and Dolls. Jayna is planning to attend CEU in the fall. Donnalee Day was selected as the winner in the Technology Education category. She is the daughter of Lavon and Marianne Day of Castle Dale. Donnalee has serv ed this past year as President of the Utah State Technology Student Association. In this position, she has planned and conducted the Utah TSA Conference and has attended three National TSA Conferences. She has also successfully competed in events at the National TSA Conferences, placing 1st in the State of Utah for four years in Prepared Presentation and placing 5th in the nation. She has also placed 7th in the nation in Chapter Team. Donnalee is planning on attending Snow College in the fall. Trista Pabst was firstin the Mu- sic category. She is the daughter of Kerry and Nancy Pabst of Fbrron. Trista has sung in the Utah Music Educators Association State Honor Choir where she wras selected to be a soloist. She was also in the UMEA State Womens Honor choir where she was a student accompanist. She has been to Region Solo and En Melodee Sue Druce semble four times and State Solo and Ensemble twice. She has been the President of the Emery High Chamber Choir and the Emery High Concert Choir. Besides singing, Trista plays the piano in the school Jazz Band and the flute in the school PCp Band. Trista teaches both piano and voice lessons. Leslie Ann Nelson was the winner in the Foreign Language category. She is the daughter of Dean and LaRita Nelson of Ferron. Leslie Ann is President of the Emery' High French Club, was in charge of Crepe Day, directed the French Pen Pal Project, and tutors high school stu- dents in French. She has also worked with Mr. Prettyman's class at Castle Dale Elementary on a French language project. Last summer, Leslie had the opportunity to visit France and throughout Europe and tried out her French on real Frenchmen. Leslie has also won several awards in English and is an honor student at Emery High School Winners received a scholarship from every university and college in the state of Utah and a S300.00 cash award from the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholars Association. Runners-u- p from Emery High were Mistie Killpaek in Business and Marketing, Jedydyah Allred in English, JaNell Jones in Science, Skyler Tanner in General Scholarship, and Daniel Cook in Mathematreceived full ics. These Runners-U- p or part tuition scholarships from Utahs universities and colleges and a cash award of SI 00.00. The winners and runners-up- s brought home a total of S1S00 in cash besides the scholarships. Also competingwere Jessica Nielson and Melodee Sue full-tuiti- Druce. Carbon High wras the host of this years competition which was held at the Student Union Center at the College of Eastern Utah. Carbon High also had four winners and six runners-up- . Grand High School had three winners and San Juan High School had one winner. Josh Rowley of Green River High School was a Runner-U- p in the SpeechDrama category. The day began with the judges from CEU, SUU, and UVSC exam- ining the student portfolios for about three hours. At noon, the students were then interview'ed by the judges. Followingthe dinner a program wras held to announce the winners. Jayna Peacock, as the Speech Drama winner, and Trista Pabst, as the Music winner, both performed at the program. The Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholars is in its 29th year of operation and Emery High and all of the high schools in the four county Ferron students put knowledge to work Ferron Elementary 6th grad- put their science knowledge to work Wednesday as they cel- ebrated spring. Just a few weeks ago, Utah State University brought classes for elementary stu-er- s dents on engineering, Students learned engineering concepts that were put to work for completingclass assignments. Both Behlings and Mrs. Ropers 6th classes held a paper airplane contest, an egg drop, and a pancake toss. Students had a great time learningwhich wings gave the most Mr. Trista Pabst area, have realized a great deal of success. Mrs. Callahan, principal of Emery High, w as in attendance at the dinner and program and commented, This has been a wonderful evening for our Sterling Scholars and for Emery High. All of our participants were successful just by being able to compete and by being here tonight. Basketball is a living part of Kalen, second nature if you will. Now that doesnt mean that he never practiced. Throughout his Castleview Hospital Congratulates Cathy Sanchez atering & Banquet high school career he was usually the first one to practice and the last one to leave. He constantly worked to improve his already impressive skills to nearly unstoppable perfection. His numbers spoke volumes, nearly averaging a triple double with over eight rebounds and assists and point averages over 20 points.
