By JAMES unteering to undertake changes required by Title I of Wl a year prior to the deadline. They also initiated L DAVIS Editor, Emery County Progress new' performance accountability re- porting systems for adult and vocational education last year. Upon application to the Department of Labor, the six states will each receive an incentive award that can be used to support WTA, adult education and Perkins vocational education programs. When the final bell rings for the school year at Cleveland Elementary and the children dash off to jump head first into their summer vacation, one other individual will exit the doors, but not towards va- cation, but retirement. Dan M. Wells, principal at Cleveland Elementary for the past 24 years, has decided to slip into retirement life and see if it fits him as comfortably as the role as principal has for all these years. You alw ays w onder if now is the time to do it. People say youll be bored, but I cant see that happening," Wells said. The Cleveland native said he had been thinking about retiring for some time, but hadnt been able to quite make up his mind. Even though he said he hadnt completely decided on retiring, he gave his wife, Dan Wells the past 24 years. For Christmas & V has been the principal of Cleveland Elementary for I gave her a plaque that said retire- ment: half as much money, twice as much husband. Dan Wells very close knit group, Wells said. Wells said he was particularly proud of the artist in residence program at the school and the support the commmunity has given in its regard. With a career as principal that a half has spanned almost decades, Wells said he has watched with interest the ebb and Dow of the school and the county itself. When I started here in 1977 we had 128 students. We climbed to 335 and were expecting to go as high as 350. We never did get to 350 students and now were down to approximately 140 students. When the sixth grade leaves and the kindergarten comes in well lose a few; about 10 as near as we can determine. Were fast approaching that number I started with. Were going through a cycle. Emery County goes through that cycle over twro and and over again, Wells said. As for what exactly Wells will do to occupy his time when retirement is a reality, he said he thinks he wont have any trouble staying busy. He and his wife (who will celebrate their 38th w'edding anniversary in June) plan to go on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints some time in the future. With 10 children and 17 grandchildren, he thinks he can find plenty to do. His youngest daughter will be a senior in high school next year. Ill be able to go to her activities and Ill be able to see wiiat our grand kids are doing, Wells said. With retirement a little more than a week away, Wells pauses when he thinks back over his career. My goal was to leave things better than I found them and I hope thats happened, he said. News Tips? Although his wife was at first hesitant about retirement life, he said it is growing on her. For Wells, who has spent 33 years in the fieldof education, 30 of them as an administrator, the thought of leaving it behind does bring back a flood of memories. One of the things that gave me a great deal of satisfaction was startingthe Castle Valley Workshop for the handicapped. At first we made lamps and desk sets that was the beginning of a program that helps train students to go out into the workforce, he said. Of his time at Cleveland Elementary he was quick to identify what he w'ould miss the most. Ill miss the association with the kids the most and the staff on a daily basis. The thing Ill miss the least are the meetings. I have a great deal of appreciation for the support of the parents over the years and the support of the community in general. The people in Cleveland have been great to w'ork with. Weve become a Originally: $1599 area of the state, and the efforts of the membership of the State and Regional Council on Workforce Services, said DWS Executive DWeve irector Robert C. Gross. worked very hard as a department to become a national leader in workforce development, ;)d this aw ard validates our efforts. The Department of Workforce Services has shown ongoing leadership in delivering employment and training services to the citizens of the state of Utah, said Governor Michael O. Leavitt. I commend them on their commitment to customer service and their one stop approach to service delivery." This is very good news and it would not have been possible without the dedicated staff w e have in OZ. Lunchables 12 fittERY Ct Mini Muffins 27500 9 ct. Frosted or Cake Brownies Donuts 99 299 6 cl.
