The government lot of time undoin gwhat the pre- uses money to take away vious president did. He has put much effort into untying multilateral treaties and agreements. peoples freedom. Government Bush doesnt think they (treaties) are a good idea. Clinton worked to undo Americas hyper power, and Bush is proud of Americas power. You will see a more mature America under the Bush administration. You will see that in more places than just Mexico. They are working on legislative packages dealing with Mexican immigration. Mexico is becoming a more responsible neighbor. We have shut down Mexican trucks enter- ing the borders. The economy is booming, energy prices are coming down, the checks are in the mail; the government is becoming more efficient and they are working to control costs. You will see a vibrant economy over the next period of time." Cannon opened the floor for questions from the audience. Dixie Swasey, Emery County recordef thanked Cannon for his support of the ammendment to protect the flag. She is an American Legion Auxiliary member. Cannon said, I appre- ciate that and I think we can legislate to protect the flag with reasonable perimeters. The Congressman briefly touched on the global warming issue saying that there is no clear indication that we are and that it is a mistake to submit to a treaty that wrould destroy the American economy. America is the place for new ideas, we develop and commercialize and it always flows to other countries. We cant do things that hobble our economy, said Cannon. One question from the audience about the burden on businesses of the unemployment tax was answered by Cannon, he said, Whenever money is sent to the government it is usually is force. Some programs do more harm than good. A program designed to increase adoptions by giving more money to the states resulted in more children being taken away from er their parents because the incentive was paid on how many children were in state custody. 1 know of a case where a couple was reported for child abuse because they refused treatment from a doctor when the dose of medicine he was prescribing was much too large for a child of that size and would have resulted in the death of the child if administered. This couple spent $350,000 in court costs proving no abuse was involved and they won at every level of the court system. Government wants power. I didnt like Bill Clinton. He had bad policies and did a terrible job as president. I believe he diverted attention away from himself and Monica Lewinsky with the situation in Kosovo. He empowered our enemies, the Chinese, with secrets that cost America He lied. He changed the nature of the presidency. America is in a period of healing," said Cannon. One audience member wanted to know about the impeachment proceedings. Cannon said, The impeachment preceedings were awful. All of the rancid details that came out. The one advantage to the situation was that Clinton was involved in these other matters for a year of his administration and that kept him from causing more problems than he did. The issue of the San Rafael Bill was addressed briefly by Cannon. He said, To get the bill passed we need to put a package together on this side that makes sense, we have a friendly administration now, that is let- - ting local people play a more significant role. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is willing to come forward and the county commissioners are in control. We need about 35 more conservative republicans to give Utah back to Utah. In Congress we are pretty much finished for this year, but the bill could be introduced next February or March. Questions from the audience were also fielded on medical insurance for the working man and problems with insurance companies calling the shots on treatments for injuries. Cannon saw these issues as big problems and agreed that insurance companies have a w ay of dragging things on. Cannon said that there are three proposed railroads in his district and he hopes to help them move forward. Cannon called coal great stuff and foresees a bright future for the industry He hopes to keep mining viable with his support for the leasing of federal coal reserves. I have a 20 pound lump of coal in my office. People use 20 pounds of coal a day in some way or another. I have been anxiously following the developments with Hunters Unit 4. 1 think Scottish Power is anxious to handle future demands and they are moving in that direction, said Cannon. Bush is proud of Americas power. He believes we can produce renewable resources and use them in a compatible way with the enviroment. The environmental movement is very demanding, they want to control everything. Emery County is a great place to live. Every time I talk to people about the San Rafael Bill, they recognize this area from the movie about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. We need to look to the future to attract people here to help the economy grow said Cannon. San Rafael - Continued from PAGE 1A. ; could hurt the establishment of the countys Western Legacy District. Cannon indi cated that he felt it might be easier to get the legislation passed if it were kept together with the National Conservation Area. The council voted to have Curtis look at the prospect of separating the Western Legacy District from the National Conservation Area legislation. The Emery County Youth City Councils in conjunction with the Emery County Recreation Department sponsored a senior citizen prom on Aug. 16. There was a program, dinner and dancing for all county senior citizens.
