Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday September 25, 2001 7A Four trout limit approved by wildlife board Anglers should enjoy more consistent trout fishing after the Utah Wildlife Board voted to lower the trout limit to four-trodaily at waters throughout Utah. ut The board set the new trout limit, as well as other regulations for Utahs 2002 fishing season, at its meeting Sept. 1 1 in Salt Lake City. The regulations approved by the board will not go into effect until Jan. 1. The lower limit will provide more consistent fishing by spreading trout out over a longer period of time, said Tom Pettengill, sport fisheries and aquatic education coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. Pettengill said that while the sale of Utah fishing licenses has leveled off over the past few years, Utahs anglers are fishing more than ever, logging 5.9 million angler days in 2000. Thats the highest number of days anglers have ever spent fishing in Utah, he said. Were still stocking 10 million fish each year, but our hatchery system isnt capable of stocking more. The limit will allow us to spread the trout we have out over a longer period of time, and anglers should enjoy more consistent fishing. Most of our major trout fishing waters currently have a limit, so reducingthe limit on the remaining waters will also simplify the regulation by making it consistent statefour-tro- four-tro- ut ut wide. Most of Utahs anglers seem to support the change. In 1995, 40 percent of the anglers surveyed by Utah State University limit. In supported a four-tro2000, 57 percent did. In just five years, theres been quite a jump in the number of people who want to see u s do this, Pettengill said. Among the exceptions to the four-trolimit are the Uinta Mountains, where anglers can have up to eight trout (as long as at least four of them were ut ut brook trout), and Flaming Gorge Reservoir, wrhere current trout limits will remain in effect until an agreement to lower the trout limit on both sides of the reservoir can be reached with Wyoming. The board wanted to keep the trout limit for children under 14 e at its current four trout daily, but a state law that says the limit for children who dont buy a license must be half q! the adult limit will require that the childrens limit be reduced to two trout daily. We will be working with the legislature to see if we can get the state law changed, and raise years-of-ag- the childrens limit to the same four-trolimit adults will ut have, Pettengill said. Other major fishing changes that will go into effect Jan. 1, include: Anglers wont be allowed to fish with whole dead fish, or whole amphibians, at Pineview, Newton and Johnson reservoirs. Weve had problems with tiger muskies swallowing the dead fish and the large treble hooks theyre fished on, Pettengill said. These large hocks, lodged deep In their throats, prevent the muskies from feeding and they end up starvingto death because they cant swallow food. d Some fish also die from hooking injuries, and some die after being handled poorly by anglers. Anglers will be allowed to keep six wipers daily at Willard Bay Reservoir. The board increased the limit to try and reduce pressure on deep-hooke- the reservoirs gizzard shad forage base, which has declined the past two years. The smallmouth bass limit at Lake Powell will be raised to 20 fish daily, while the bass limit will be dropped to five fish, and the crappie limit will be dropped to 10 fish. Taking more smallmouth bass will reduce competition for food, and should increase the size of smallmouth bass in the lake, Pettengill said. Largemouth bass and crappie populations in the lake as the lake has gotten older and brushy habitat has declined. Reducingthe limit on these fish will provide more consistent fishing by spreading them out over a longer period large-mou- th have-decline- of time. The limit on a small stretch of the Weber River will be changed to two trout daily, with only artificial flies and lures allowed. The stretch is from the first bridge, upstream from Echo Reservoir, to the bridge, near Wanship. Weve worked with private landowners and have acquired some excellent public access alongthis stretch, which has increased fishingpressure on the wild brown and cutthroat trout populations there, Pettengill Your Complete Kitchen & Bath Design Centert 'St' J. 3 . V . , ."' ufe- r - , .'' - - ' said. We want to provide anglers with good, consistent fishing. Lowering the limit, and reducing the loss of fish that are caught and released by going to an artificial fly and lure restriction, should do that. rs V ? ' Photos by J.L. Davis III Goal!
