Some have range permits and others run on private ground, but either way families look forward to this time of year and to getting every cow and calf safely home to pasture before winter sets in too hard. The scene has changed over' the years. Gatherers would have to start out with extra pack horses and provisions and ride horses into the mountains, stay for several days to gather and then start to push the animals toward big log corrals where they would be separated, then driven on home by each family.. Now the large capacity horse and stock trailers are hitched up to pickups, a horse is loaded in and away the cattleman gees to see what he cajii find for that day. Provisions are just water and a lunch, as most head home with the few cows found that day, and look forward to sleeping in their own beds and not camping out on the range. Cooperation among cattlemen is appreciated by all. Either you have seen someones cow and calf, or If It gets in with your bunch, you call and tell the cattlemen you herded it with yours, where it Is, or that you have it In your corral, safe and sound until he can come and get it, knowing that he will do the same for you.
