Theyre pushing the old Wilderness flim-fla- m Its This Monument-or-It- s again. DONT FALL FOR IT! proposal by Theyre trying to scare you into supporting their 621 ,000-acr- e claiming that if we dont go for this monument, well get wilderness designated on the Swell instead. You deserve to know the truth! Here are the FACTS: Wilderness designation is a completely separate process that only Congress can do. It can designate wilderness only on federally-manage- d tional parks, national forests, BLM-manag- ed land; naland, wild- refuges, etc. - and has done so. Congress can create wilderness whether this monument is created life or not, attention to the Swell, creating this huge monument would likely make massive wilderness designation MORE LIKELY! In creBy drawing national ating the Grand Staircase Escalante Monument in southern Utah, Clinton gave the wilderness extremists everything they wanted. Yet, they did NOT drop their demands for designated wilderness inside that monu- ment. The fact is that in their current Red Rock Wilderness bill they have substantially INCREASED the amount of wilderness they are demanding over what they were demanding in 1996 when Clinton created the monument! They are using the fact that it IS a monument to redesignate EVEN MORE wilderness. They will do the same to us! To The wilderness extremists say they will not be satisfied with any monument that is not virtual, if not Congressionally-designatewilderness. One of their spokesmen, Mike Matz, recently said that they would only accept a San Rafael monument that provides adequate protection, closely approximating if d, not identical to wilderness. No matter what Bush might do to protect current uses in any monument he designates, a future greenie president with just a stroke of his pen can undo all of Bushs protections and make the entire monument a virtual wilderness. Monument designation does not effect the existing Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) on the Swell. They can only be removed by Congressional action, not by a president. That means that at some point, Congress will still act on wilderness on the Swell, no matter what. the Monument. For our future! For our grandchildrens future! NO!
