Show s By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - KAYSVILLE When Jeff Sing-le- y enrolled at Davis High last fall, after his family had moved here from Mesa, Ariz., in the beginning he was just another move-in- . BUT AFTER four weeks into the track and field season, Coach Mike Shaw doesnt think of Sing-le- y as a mere move-in- , but is rather his up and coming hurdling star. In a dual meet against Bountiful 84 last week, in which Davis destroyed a poor Bountiful team. Sing-lewon again in both the high and the low hurdles. His times were y quite impressive, hoovering down around the low 15 second mark in the high hurdles. BESIDES helping Shaw in the hurdles, Singley also was a leg of the winning mile relay team. "Hes the type that is one of the last to leave our workout sessions. Really, Jeff is just what a coach dreams will come along. Im not saying that he will win the state title in the hurdles, but because of his hard work and dedication, the other kids have rallied around him. BUT THEN too, Jeff will probably be in the top three or four when its finally said and done. said Shaw. Other standouts in Davis track as of late include Morgan Nelson who took first in the high jump and the long jump against Davis. Morgan made a jump against Bountiful but has jumped over 21 feet this year. In the high jump he went over 6 feet 4 inches. 19-fo- STILL ANOTHER Davis standout has been Matt Kimball who swept both the 1600 and 3200 meters against Bountiful. Matts times were not as impressive as they were against Layton and Viewmont, but Coach Shaw thought the competition had a lot to do with the slow times. Kevin Tyler surprised a lot of folks last week against Bountiful as he won both the shot put and discus. Tyler is a senior, along with Kimball, Nelson and Singley. STILL ANOTHER impressive performance for the Darts was that of Mark Gunty in the 400 meters. He is a transfer student from Bountiful w ho blitzed his old teammates in that race. Gunty, a junior, posted a time of 52 seconds flat in the 400 meters. This week the Dart club will go against East in a dual meet on Wednesday and then will attend the Icebreaker Invitational at Ben Lomond High this Friday and Saturday. i By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON - After a very imdual meet victory pressive over Weber High last week, it appears the Layton High track and field team is priming itself to be the club to dethrone Clearfield in Region One track. -- 92-4- 9 Flying Ricky Smith was given a stiff challenge by Box Elder's 400 meters entry but he still came out on top with a time of 50.2 seconds. But Russ Jones has found the right combination of this years seniors and juniors to put together a highly respected program. It wont be until May 2 when Clearfield and Layton meet in their dual meet, but that day could produce one of the most exciting in match-up- s Clearfield-Layto- n their long history. IVE PUT some thought into our meeting with Clearfield, but lately Ive decided its more important to concentrate on whats at hand. This week we face Box Elder at home on Wednesday and were looking forward to the Icebreaker Invitational this Friday and Satur day at Ben Lomond, said Jones. In the impressive win over Weber last week, the times posted may have been a little off according to Jones (a little better than they should have been), but the progress of his sprinters and distance people continues to get better. none-the-le- TONY WALTERS ss and Darryl Lacey continue to improve in the 100 and 200 meters but Jones says his two top sprinters still have more to give him. Also coming along in the sprints, two months behind the first two, is Chuck Hanor. Chuck is making some great progress, said Jones, Hes right behind those first two. With Lacey, Walters and Hanor around, Layton didnt have any trouble winning the sprint relay either. I suppose the areas I was really happy in was things like Dave Brimhalls 52-- 3 shot put throw. That was his furtherest throw of the year. Dave also won the discus. I WAS ALSO proud again of Terry Kealamakia in the hurdles. Hes just a junior and hes working his guts out. I think hes even got some of our own guys intimidated because of his hard work. (Terry won again in the highs and the low s against Weber.) "I think Terry is going to be a great one when its all over. His attitude is terrific and like I said, he works his guts out. Even though he doesnt want to do four events every meet, he does it anyway. In the workouts, the rest of the kids just simply cant stay up with him. HES ONE of those kids that I just asked to come out. We started him out in the sprints and didn't do too bad. But after awhile 1 began taking a little closer look at him. Heres a guy who is 3 with good he make a good hurdmight speed, ler. I worked him a little on the hurdles his sophomore year but it wasnt until this year that I had him working regularly on them. Terry had never run the full length of highs until this year. Ever since the BYU Indoor Invitational, Kealamakia has been on a tear. Hes not only working hard , but hes interested in the thing too. He was up to Weber State last weekend with Rich Elmore to watch the Weber State meet with the college runners, said Jones. ELMORE continues to improve in his times in the mile and two miles. The Layton junior was that Box Elder will be the most improved team come Region One meet time. "Because of our start indoor, we were in better shape and that will make a lot of difference, said Flint. As in most of Clearfields competition this year so far, the Falcons really havent had much competition to speak of.
