SOME STUDENTS have gone into college to receive advanced degrees because of the successful experiences they have had in the horticulture program at Layton High. Each year a team is selected from the class members to compete against other school teams in a horticulture contest. Ther are 52 schools that compete in the FFA state judging contests. Not all schools enter the horticulture contest IN THE pwst seven years since the program originated, Layton High School has won the state contest six times. The contest is divided into four sections. It takes a full day to complete the entire testing process. In the plant identifica- tion division, students are asked to give the common and scientific name for most of the common potted flowers, green foliage and cut flowers. Asteraceous monfolium can be called a chrysanthemum. Pelargonium is the name for a geranium. THE NEXT part of the competition is a written exam that covers all aspects of the horticulture field. Students claim this is the toughest section. Students must be able to grade floral materials. FINALLY, there are five 776-110- 3 TODAY James Steedes practicums the students must do. These include making floral arrangements, afresh flower order and a corsage, taking a telephone order, potting a chrysanthemum cuttings, preparing a floral product for sale.
