The Preamble of this governing document stated, We the school teachers of Davis County seeing the necessity of an organization by which we can more systematically study the history and principles of education do organize ourselves into a Reading Circle. ANY PERSON over 16 years of age who endorsed the Constitution was eligible for membership. Teacher meetings were held every two weeks. Guest lecturers were invited to the meetings. Frequently one of the teachers would prepare a speech about a topic of interest to educators. SOME subjects discussed were: the reasons for teaching drawing to children; what does Hebrew Pedagogy and life teach us; The Homer influence on education; methods of teaching spelling; How to teach numbers to new beginners; What is meant by new education and what kinds of knowledge should a successful teacher have. One special debate centered around the topic Resolved that a child should not be forced to study. Teachers gave one dollar of their pay each month to buy books for a teachers library. Later this amount was reduced to 50 cents per year. TEACHERS who did not regularly attend meetings were told they would have their certificates withheld. The first teacher organization Constitution adopted in 1891 was formulated by a committee selected soon after the teacher organization was formed. The official date of organization was Dec. 6, 1980. The three day session featured speakers who talked about school organization, lesson plans, principles of catechisation and teacher problems. ON OCT. 10, 1891 Supt. Linford called for the teachers to adopt a new Constitution. The preamble stated, For the advancement of the teachers profession and for the mutual benefit to be desired from a discussion of educational principles and methods the undersigned form themselves into a teachers society. The name of the organization was changed from a teachers reading circle to The Teachers League of Davis County. Courses of study and examinations leading to a teaching certificate were outlined. Topics to be studied by prospective teachers included algebra, civil government, grammar, arithmetic, geography and pedagogy. IN 1894 The Teachers League decided phonics should be more thoroughly taught. The subject of physical training is being neglected in the schools and should be looked after more carefully. Reports should be sent in promptly at the end of each term. BARNES SALUTES AMERICAN WORKERS ? y ON THIS LABOR DAY 5-- Latex Rat Enamel Stepladder y interior wall and trim finish.
