Show AUGUST 31, 1983 Battles Comity chance to test their pass defense which allowed the Viking QB over 200 yards passing. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports ONE THING is for sure. Clearfield will need to secure a victory over Woods Cross for confidence sake, before they set sail for a road contest w ith the powerful Davis team just a week later. Farner, the WX QB stands 2 and 190 and is supposed to be a better passer than View-monMeservy. His coaches say he threw for over 170 yards in the 2 victory over South last week and that he scrambled and scored the winning touchdown on foot. But the coaches do say Farner isnt the scrambler people have told them that Meservy is. The week we are in has been a testing period for Davis, Clearfield and Layton prep football clubs, but Friday night comes the final exam. EACH OF the Northern Davis County football teams had an area or two theyd like to improve on during their second outing and all will get that chance as each is at 6-- ts pre-seas- 15-1- home for another gridiron clash. The Darts, who were 40-- 7 victors over Weber High, will entertain Ben Lomond at 7:30. Clearfield, which lost a double overtime deci- sion to Viewmont, will host Woods Cross at 7:30 and Layton who shut out a good Bountiful will make way for the Vikings of club 10-Viewmont. o Ss Woods Cross at Clearfield 7:30 P.M. If you asked a Clearfield coach, from Brent Hancock right down to the assistants, where do the Falcons need to improve, you'd probably get the same answer all the way around. THE STAFF might tell you that the team needs to overload in the intensity department, especially down the stretch of a game. A lack of just that, allowed Viewmont to come from behind and clip them in their opener. The Falcons will be facing probably a better passing team than what they faced in Meservy and Co., when Woods Cross and Mike Farner come to town. This will give them a second ELDRACHERS comments were, Im sure Clearfield is going to be hungry after losing the way they did the other night, but I feel good about what weve got going too. The leadership this year will be an important thing for us. The Falcons will have to count on superb performances from people likeGuyFitzgerald, Greg Folk, Kim Thurgood, Ed Naylor, Tom Wood and a list of other talented defensive people. ANOTHER THING that Woods Cross has that Viewmont didnt, is a bigger and more talented offensive line. The Wildcat front lint averages nearly 200 pounds or better and allowed Farner to be sacked only once against South. The Falcons were awfully tough against the run last Friday, allowing Viewmont no positive yardage at all. The Wildcats top runner is Mike Dailey, who is best around the corners and in catching short passes and burning yards up that way. LOOK FOR Woods Cross to go to 6-- 180 Travis McBeth most of the time. Clearfield fans might remember their own Roger Vincent from a few years back, McBeth is much that type of player who is strong, has good hands and is a monster at the defensive end position. Larry Eldracher, the head man, stated, He surprised us, he can really run over some people. One inside note about Woods Cross, is the unity that exists among their senior class. These kids have been playing for Eldracher for three years now, and they admire his system and want to win. Robert Easton and Dave Jones, two of the big upfront offensive line people, along with McBeth who are the tricaptains, were emotional enough before the Vikings at Layton 7:30 P.M. 2, Analyzing this game brings one to a simple but realistic conclusion, Viewmont will pass the ball and hope they are as successful as they were last week against Clearfield and Layton on the other hand, will hope that Tom Kidd, Mike Tucker and Brian Bailey are ready and rearing to chew up some ground on foot. MorTHE SCOTS were 0 losers to Davis while gan High in their season opener defeated Weber soundly, 40-Sawley has a perfect record against the Scots, having beat them every year he has been the head coach at Davis. Last year most of the same kids that line the roster today, beat the Scotties by a score of 28-1- 3. THE SCOTS did look good at times against the Morgan team, nearly pulling the game out in the end. The Ogden based team primarily runs the ball with quick footed backs that can burst around the corners and head for daylight. The scouting reports at Davis say Ben Lomond runs 60 to 65 percent of the time. About the upcoming game, a few of the Davis seniors had a few comments worthy of mention. First, Jeff Hammer, the linebacker and runningback, commented, I thought we looked pretty good our first game, but realistically we know were going to meet tougher teams in the future and we had better be prepared for them as much as we were for Weber. AS FAR as Ben Lomond, Clearfield and then our league, we just have to keep things in perspective and well do alright. The QB, Steve Sargent, who has put on about 20 pounds and now stands about commented, Coach Sawley is a super coach and he has told us that to keep a handle on things. He says the minute things get outol control, we'll be sorry for it. Lomond at rumors are quickly round, the coming fact. At Viewmont and Layton, it became apparent to a lot of people that the Lancers were going back to the veer offense while Warren Hatch was sticking with the pass to make his fortunes as a first year head coach come true. Hatch, who was the offense coordinator be- 2-- A 22-2- Ben AS THE season brings itself to the second pre-seas- took place last Friday, Ben Lomond may be in for quite a battle if they expect to win this one. under Kim Peterson at Bountiful last year, said only one thing about his kids victory over Clearfield and that was, They always found a way to beat ya. VIEWMONTS bunch is a gutsy bunch of athletes led by Jeff Meservy at QB. He was brilliant in escaping tackier after tackier against Clearfield and more often than not, he usually found the open receiver. The ground game at Viewmont will get better, (they gained no yards against Clearfield), and Hatch pointed out that some things would take place to make it better this week against the Lancers. All in all. Hatch and his staff have to be given credit for their victory as a brand new staff last Friday night in Clearfield. THE VIEWMONT coach said it wouldnt do his club any good to key only on Laytons Tom Kidd, because theyve gained respect through scouting reports, for Mike Tucker too. Viewmont will certainly not be the size of team that Bountiful was last week, but some of that gutsy play might make up for the size difference. FOR LAYTON, the coaching staff with its two new additions in Brian Poll and Monte Green, has now had a game under their belts together. Hansen sees that as a positive as well as the kids working together. As for the kids, Hansen will expect the same kind of enthusiasm and spark that surfaced last week, to come around again and make it two in a row. South game that they actually started tearing up. Said McBeth, After the coin flip, we came off the field telling ourselves a thousand times we werent going to lose. OUR RUNNING attack is as strong as it was last season and even though 1 like to throw the ball once in a while, I cant complain when were getting six yards per carry. Davis 7:30 P.M. Sawley wrapped things up by stating, Its just taking each game, one at a time. This team is no different than any of the rest that have been here, if they want to win then theyll have to work for it. This is the only school that the Darts will play this year, and by the indications of what A Commentary by Keith Duncan P7TO Cl There have been some glorious LAYTON history of Layton days in the but last football, High Monday has to rank with the best of them. IT WAS Monday that former Lancer great and graduate. Chuck Ehin, found his name on a locker which signified that he was going to be one of the 49 players that would line the coming years roster of the San Diego Chargers. It was Monday evening that over 7 1 ,000 people in Giants Stadium in New Jersey, plus millions of TV football fans all across the country sat and watched another Lancer football great, Dave Burke, start and perform brilliantly with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE piece of news was the announcement that still another former Lancer, James Suitt, would be the starting left tackle for the Utah State Aggies when they traveled to Tempe, Ariz. on Sept. 10 to meet Arizona State. If you wanted to go just a little bit further and make the day even better, you could make a trip to your local magazine store and read any college preview edition and find that all of them had high regards for former Lancer, Brandon Flint, wholl be playing his final year in a BYU uniform this season. STILL ANOTHER piece of news concerning a former Layton Lancer is that of Maurice Turner who performed four great years with the Utah State Aggies. A call to the Minnesota Vikings main office Tuesday morning, still was too early to tell whether Maurice had officially made that team. I first learned of Chuck Ehin's accomplishment from his father, Charles, who called from his home in Bountiful. The father was quite elated as most fathers would be, that his son ? had made the roster of one of the most impressive teams in all of pro football. FOR THOSE of us who are following Chucks career, his dad informs me that Chuck registered his first pro sack against the L.A. Rams last week in the game. Chuck did play a total of 45 minutes against the 49ers the week before, which gave the defensive people at San Diego a good amount of time to look at him. About the only sad thing in Chucks life right now, is the fact he has seen very little of his brand new little baby boy, Ryan Charles, who was born just recently. pre-seas- CHUCK HAS been accepted well by the Charger veterans, according to his father. Ive heard theyve invited him to a few of and like Chuck because of their said Mr. Ehin. his likeable personality, Chuck has mostly been playing defensive end with the Chargers, but has played nearly all the defensive positions on the front line ' which has made him very flexible. OF THOSE who knew Dave Burke, either as a school or teammate, if they knew he was playing on national TV, they could probably be found watching him Monday night as his team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, took on the defending national champions, the Penn State Nittney Lions. HEALTH FLEAS Fleas are the most irritating pests of cats and dogs. They are more than just a nuisance, fleas can create serious health problems for your pet. Besides feeding on your pets blood, fleas cause skin irritation which can lead to infection and other complications, because of the pets scratching. Since fleas serve as an intermediate host for the canine tapeworms, they can be the source of these worms if swallowed. Although your pet is their ideal home, these tiny pests are very mobile. Besides hopping from one animal to another, fleas take vacations in your pets bedding, your carpet and your clothing. They can survive up to 125 days without a host. They multiply very quickly. A single female flea can lay one hundred eggs. Successful eradication or control depends on thorough and repeated treatment of the animal and its environment to consistently kill adult fleas before they have a chance to lay eggs.
