Show MAY 4, 1983 Playoffs Start Friday Hawkins Does It Again Bitners Darts Claim Region 4 Soccer Title; LHS In Playoffs Two northern Davis County schools, Davis and Layton, will enter the 1983 soccer playoffs, each in different fashions. 4-- THE DIFFERENCE is that the Darts, under the direction of Bruce Bitner, will automatically skip the first round of the playoffs which right they earned by claiming the 83 Region Four title. Davis will bye into the second round, as do the other three region champions. State playoff action takes place this year at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. LAYTON BEGINS their playoff action late this week when they perhaps will host Taylorsville in a playoff to earn a berth to the playoffs at Westminster. The Lancers finished second in their region to Bonneville. In action Monday night, Davis moved their and overall mark to region record to with a 0 drubbing of Bountiful. Layton meanwhile, fell to Weber at Weber, 1 in dou 10-1--2, 6-- 2-- ble overtime. The Lancers ended the season with region record of Lancers In Playoffs; Darts, Falcons Out in. Davis first game in the playoffs will take Clearfield Falcons place at 1:45 p.m. WITH DAVIS title this spring in soccer, it makes for the third outright soccer title that Bitner-le- d teams have claimed in the past four seasons. As Bitner said, We started a little slower, maybe because it was Monday, but it didnt take long for the kids to get moving. They wanted nothing to do with the idea of sharing the region title with someone else. Again it was the strong play of goalie Scott Argyle that paced the Darts. Bitner was also impressed the cross shots of Brian Bacon and the overall play of Chad Morgan. These three were super all year, they kept us alert all year, Bitner said. IT WAS A fun outing, in that I got all of the seniors into the game, said Bitner, You cant fault Bountiful because they had some key kids out of town, but it was fun to see all of our regulars get some good solid playing time LAYTON HAS been led by Andy Johnston this season and despite their narrow loss to Weber Monday night, his attitude about the game and the upcoming playoffs was positive. Weber deserved to win it. We had beaten them before and perhaps were a little too bigheaded. But I believe the kids w ill be ready and tuned up for state. Layton, who has been led through most of the season by such kids as Ed Frazier, Raymond Pollard, Marlow Nimory and Erik Johnston, finished tied with Weber for second place in the region. Both ended with 14 points. Bonneville won the league with a record, with both of their ties coming from the Lancers. LAYTON WILL be looking forward to the upcoming playoffs, as will the Darts. Double elimination is the format of the 1983 playoffs. Former lancer, Chuck Ehm Mopes For The Best M Bros Editor's Note: The following is a special interview conducted with former BYU defensive standout, Chuck Ehin, who was drafted in the 12th round by the San Diego Chargers of the National Football Conference. (The interview was conducted over the phone from Chucks hotel room in San Diego where he is presently working out with the Chargers.) - Of the three prep baseball teams in northern Davis County, one has made it for sure to the playoffs, one still had fleeting hopes and anothers hopes will have to be shelved for another year. OF COURSE by the time this publication comes to you, most of the final decisions on who is in and who isnt will have already been established. Brad Hawkins Layton Lancers are the team that will for sure be playing in the 1983 postseason playoffs, which makes it three for three for Hawkins led teams making the playoffs. THE LANCERS were to play Sky View on Monday and Weber on Tuesday of this week. A win over the Bobcats', on Monday would have made the Lancers outright Region One champion. Clearfield, who scored an impressive 10-- 4 win over Sky View last Friday afternoon in Clearfield, were hoping early this week that Roy were to lose, thus enhancing their chances of still getting into the playoffs. HIGHLAND spelled the curtain-closin- g story to Davis playoff hopes with a 10-- 9 victory Friday, despite a grand slam home run by junior Greg McNabb. The Darts were to wrap up their '83 season with a home contest against Bountiful early this week. -- Layton Lancers Brad Hawkins, who lives in LAYTON made a quick trip to the Layton diOgden, amond Sunday and predicted that if no more rain were to come, well get our games in. There may have been a few people in the Orem, Utah area last Friday that were expectant of a phone call, but none more than Chuck and Barbara Ehin who were awaiting any kind of news about the days National Football THE LANCERS were 2 as of Monday morning, tied with Weber High for the league lead. The Region One champion will advance directly into the playoff picture while the second and third place teams must face playoffs with any of the following three teams, either Hillcrest, Bingham or Brighton. The Lancers were dealt a severe blow last week when third baseman Craig Kennedy was hit with a line drive to the head that knocks him out of further action this season. Kennedys condition was improving at our last report, being home from the hospital and getting well enough that he at least might be able to get up and physically get to the ballpark to see his Lancer teammates do well in the playoffs. 6-- Leagues players draft. 4-- A WHY WOULDNT Chuck be excited about getting a phone call? In his discussions with NFL scouts from such teams as Seattle and Dallas, hed been told that he ranked as high as 1 1th among major college linemen. Its no secret that he expected to be drafted and it wouldnt have been surprising to have seen him get picked as soon as the fifth or sixth round. But for a variety of reasons no news came of getting picked, not at least until late, late Friday night. THE PHONE kept ringing throughout the said Hawkins, HES HEARTBROKEN, Craig was making a bunch of great plays for us, in fact he had committed only two errors before getting hurt. We also couldnt complain about his hitting. The last time I glanced at the chart, Craig was hitting over .300. day, but it was friends and people asking if Id gone in the draft yet. Finally a friend came over to cheer me up, but wed basically given up, said the former Layton Lancer girdiron great. BUT THE starting day that things will really count for Chuck and the other draftees will not be until July 15th when official camps begin operation. Its from there that well find who makes it and who doesnt, said Ehin. Mike and I became pretty good friends when we didnt even know that San Diego was ITS NOT EASY to figure out, said Draayer about things such as the injuries that beset his pitchers or the struggle some people had at the plate. Rick Secrist didnt enjoy the kind of season he would have liked to, but as Draayer said, Rick might get a chance to go on to play some ball elsewhere and I wouldnt be surprised to see him bat .500 like he did his junior year. Its funny how one quick season can turn it around. Draayer was happy with the year that catcher James Validerheigh had. He was our catylst and was the steady one all year long, he said. WITH THE PROS It was a late night phone call last week that sent former Layton High football great, Chuck Ehin, to San Diego. The NFL Chargers selected him in the 12th round of the player draft. Ehin, who also enjoyed four successful years with the BYU Cougars, is hoping for the best in his chances of making the Chargers defensive unit. IVE ALSO BEEN able to meet a few famil- Blue-Gra- y ONE OF THOSE things that failed perhaps, was the letdown in the pitching department. Though there are hardly none better than David Johnson, injuries shut out good showings by the rest of the staff. Such was the case last Friday when starter Jay Jeppson suffered an injury to his elbow. Something popped, but whatever it was it took him out, said Kent Draayer. At times the Darts have enjoyed some sparkling hitting performances, such as the show Greg McNabb and Wyley Carlson put on Friday. Each of them collected a pair of hits including McNabbs grand slam home run. THE EXPERIENCED PET se played in the Davis Darts KAYSVILLE - Not many things come through for the Darts, things which were counted on pretty heavily to make it through. - But about 1 1:30 p.m. that night, the phone rang and it was someone from the San Diego Chargers organization. He told me that if no one else picked me up, that Id be going there as a Charger. He had me hold the line for about 20 minutes and later confirmed the fact I was going to San Diego. We later went out for pizzas that night and didnt get to bed until 3 a.m. that night, said Ehin. A FEW DAYS later Ehin was off to San Diego to workout with the fellow draftees and free agents. Chuck has decided to stay over through this week and attend the same type of camp for the veterans this weekend. The April and May workouts are nothing more than to familarize the potential Chargers with the kind of defenses and offenses run by the organization. Its just getting used to the system, Chuck reported. The Falcon's 10-- 4 slugfest CLEARFIELD last Friday was as View over Sky victory Coach Kenny Hicks said, Very necessary." IF ROY were to lose early in the week and Clearfield were to beat Sky View again, it would necessitate a playoff between the Royals and the Falcons for the final playoff spot in Region One. The Falcons had a couple of sophomore pitchers do the job for them Friday against the Bobcats. Greg Bozeman and Ryan Fisher teamed up to hold Sky View to seven hits and four runs. CLEARFIELDS main corp of pitchers, guys like Greg Folk, Jeff Parry and Phil Peterson have been required to stay off the mound recently because of sore arms. Hicks is confident that if his team gets a shot at the playoff, his team is as good, young or not, as any in the league. On any given day these kids could beat any other team in the league, said Hicks. The Falcons, despite being a team loaded with youth, had lost five of their nine league games by a grand total of six runs. Four of those losses had come by just one losses to nearby Layton. run including two BUT I guess any team can excuse themselves on close games, but weve sure had our share, he said. Hicks is very happy about the hitting of his senior first basemen and pitcher, Blake Wilden who collected five hits last week in two games against Sky View Friday, Wilden notched three singles.
