THE LANCERS other top wrestler is Mike Petroff who is Davis Countys top 22 pounder. He rose to the occasion in a year when Layton wrestling needed a few bold ones to step forward in order that the season wouldnt result in a total relapse. Mike finished the season in style by earning a berth in the coveted state tournament which happened after he barely lost out for the Region One title to a Sky View wrestler. 1 Another Viewmont wrestler, Chris Platt, is the choice at 126 lbs. As a senior, Chris established himself as a top contender for state with a fine 27-- 4 record including a region championship. When all was said and done, Chris claimed third place in the 4A state meet. con history to win state cham- pionships in back to back years. He won last years 141 bracket and this seasons 148 lbs. championship. Kopecky was named the states outwrestler in the standing state tournament just completed. 4-- The 155 lbs. class was the toughest to pick. Four or five great wrestlers in this weight all did their thing for Davis County schools. When all was said and done though, Gordon Peck of Woods Cross was the winner. He claimed the region title and then went on to place third at the state event while posting a fine 23-- record for the season. Viewmont senior Todd Larkin is our choice at 167 pounds. The tall blond won the state title at this weight to go along with the region crown, while running up an impress1 record. ive 5 Todd came back from a FROM CLEARFIELD High came Steve Ulibarri at 101 lbs. Steve finished the season with a sparkling overall record of and became the first 28-- 1 wrestler in Clearfield High history to place three consecutive years in the state tournament. At the recently completed state tourney, Steve wound up third after losing in the semifinals. As ajunior he was the state champion and as a sophomore was fourth in the state. CHRIS HANSEN of Viewmont is the obvious choice at 105 lbs. The senior Viking placed third at the state tournament after winning his second region title in as many years. This past season Chris earned a 23-- record to go with his 1 mark of a year ago. FROM LAYTON High comes Robbie Zamora who fills the 1 Bruce Frodsham (Davis) nty JUNIOR MATT McNeil of Viewmont came out of nowhere to claim second place at the state tournament in the 132 lbs. class. In his own quiet way Matt worked his way to a 26-- 5 season which included a region title at that weight. For this effort he was selected as the 132 pounder. Senior Miland Kofford of Woods Cross closed out a great year with a state title at 138 lbs. On the year Miland had a 26-- 4 record, a region title and a state crown. THIS WEIGHT was unknown going into the state event but Miland wrestled extremely well in claiming the top honor. 15-- squad's 115 lbs. position. Zamora was the defending state champion going into this year and while trying to defend that title this month was beaten by Trevor Marsh and had to settle for second place. The name Zamora has become a household wrestling CLEARFIELDS other enteam is none try on the other than Doug Kopecky, without question the outstanding wrestler on this banner squad. all-st- Kopecky has compiled a perfect and very impressive 52-- 0 record in two years of Clearfield wrestling. He became the first grappler in Fal- - slight knee injury suffered in a Christmas tournament to win the state title at this weight. A year ago as ajunior Todd was third at the state event. Robert Steed and Cary Blood of Davis round out the final two spots for the County team filling the 188 dbs. class and unlimited brackets respectively. STFED LOST a close 4 to Scott Jenks of Sky View in the championship bout of the 1982 state tournament and had to settle for second place. In four years of Davis High wrestling Steed compiled an impressive heap of victories, some 91 to be sure. That figure included a record of over 25 wins this year with only two losses. Steed was beaten only once in Davis County intersquad competition and that loss came from Karl Wilson of Clearfield. Blood, despite being the countys lightest heavyweight, was the elite of the unlimited. Cary won the Region Four championship and ended up finishing fourth in the run for the state title.
