He holds every major Scouting award including the Eagle, the Award of Merit, the Wood Badge and the Silver Beaver. IT WOULD be impossible to calculate the number of boys Mr. Talbot has instructed in Scouting or to estimate the influence he has had on the lives of others, especially the youth. In 1921 Irwin Talbot joined Troop 2, sponsored by the Layton LDS Ward. This was one of the first Boy Scout units in Davis County and in the Gateway District. AFTER COMPLETING his school day at Layton Elementary on West Gentile, Irwin and other boys would walk to the old Layton Ward Opera House that was near the intersection of Gordon Ave. and Church Street. They would have to start a fire so the building would be warm for Scout meeting. He would then walk home, do the necessary house and farm chores and return to the Opera House for Scout meeting. There were about 31 Scouts in the original troop. Sterling W. Sill was the Scoutmaster and Francis E. Wiggill was his assistant. IRWIN TALBOT later served as assistant scoutmaster with Sterling Sill as scoutmaster. From 1953 to 1955, Mr. Talbot served as the first scoutmaster of Troop 162 in the Layton 5th LDS Ward. At this time, he received the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Department of the Interior) First Aid Certificate and additional first aid training. In 1960 to 1972 he w as an approved Red Cross first aid instructor. He has even given first aid courses to girl scouts. EARLY training was important to the success of Mr. Talbot in the scouting program. In 1931, he completed the BSA manual on patrol methods. In 1936, he completed Parts I and II. Elements of Scout Mastership" and in 1938 he com111 of the pleted Parts 1. II and Elements course. Much of Mr. Talbot's Scouting work has been done out of doors. In 1933 he took the Kit Carson hike in Yellowstone Park with 92 other scouts and leaders. He completed another Kit Carson hike in the Uintah Mountains, reaching the summit of Utah's highest mountain, Kings Peak ( 3,528 feet). HE HAS been a leader of more than 15 summer camps, mostly at Camp Kiesel in Ogden Canyon. One of the outstanding scouting experiences Mr. Talbot likes to talk about happened in 1953. He was the scoutmaster in charge of a group of boys who attended the National Jamboree in California. Mr. Talbot has a neckerchief with the names of the boys he took to the Jamboree written on it. AMONG THE scouting awards Mr. Talbot has earned 1 Wood Badge (19"9l the 50 year veteran (19781 and the Silver Beaver (1979). In 19"8 he received the Charles S. Morgan his Memorial Troop Award. is given out yearly through the local troop to an outstanding boy or leader. The award was designed by the boys in the troop. Mr. Talbot prizes this honor giv en him by the boy s in his ow n area. Besides holding the position of assistant scoutmaster and scoutmaster. Mr. Talbot has worked as the Scout O Rama judging coordinator, the Gateway District Neighborhood Commissioner and the Gateway District Camping Commissioner. An acive member of the LDS Church. Mr. Talbot has held many positions in the church including executive secretary, assistant stake clerk and high priest group secretary. IRWIN Talbot and his wife, Clara, are the parents of four married children. Dr. Kenneth Talbot and his family live in Sunnyvale. Calif. Lester Talbot and his family live in Layton.
