Show t I WEEKLY REFLEX 19, 1981 DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, NOVEMBER 8 I TENNIS SAVS the team has a long way to go before he w ill By KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD - Scott Tennis arrived at Clearfield five years ago he was determined to fill a wrestling room with plenty of enthusiastic wrestlers to start a new season with. clearly see where every one fits it. This week the Falcons were to conduct wrestle-off- s to determine things a little more. With the returning letter-meand there are some good ones. Tennis has a pretty good idea at some weights. But he FOLKS, believe it, it has been done. sees at least four or five weights completely open When where plenty of sophomores juniors might emerge. Last week as wrestling tryouts took off into the second week, Tennis had his hands plenty full. Some 50 kids crammed into the Clearfield w restling complex last week, a far cry from what he started with in 1976 and 77. and TENNIS SAVS one of the best things going for him pow is the letterman he has who assist him with the younger wrestlers. Steve Ulibarri may end ITS wrestling at 105 early in the season before settling in the 98 pound position where he battled and claimed the state championship last year. At least that is the way Tennis would like to see it done. Either way, Ulibarri is a classic and is considered as ope of the top wrestlers in the state of Utah. He became only the second wrestler in Clearfield BEEN different having so many kids. But this is what I've worked for, said Tennis. "Even though I don't feel like I've got a real good handle on it. 4-- But it would lake someone more than human to have a handle on 50 wrestlers at the same time, especially when 30 of them are sophomores. By KEITH DUNCAN Thompson had his last two teams place among the top state. KAYSVILLE-The- re were happy moments mixed with the unpleasant ones during Davis High's wrestling season last year. SO HOW does Dickson match all that? It hasn't been any easy task. Dickson was forced to wrestle with a lot of younger kids in 1980, in fact there were times when four or five sophomores were wrestling on the varsity team. ONE EXAMPLE of the more brighter memories would have to be Cary Blood's 7-- 1 victory over Mark Blosoch in the state tournament. Blo- soch was the Region Five champion and was the MVP in football from West High. Those kind of Davis wrestling memories are the kind not easily forgotten. It had to be Carys happiest moment at least, said Jim Dickson, the Dart head wrestling mentor. "It was without question my happiest moment for him." ' Si WES MULLINS always seems to get the job done during tournaments. That's in- dicative of the finishes he had in 1980. He placed first in the region meet and eventually took second place in the state meet. Though he tends to wrestle hurt a portion of the time, Mullins has good technique and good strength. AT 119 the Falcons have Rene Espolon, Tony Archulet-t- a and Sonny Ecord with maybe at least six others hind them. be- Both the 126 and 132 pound divisions are open at this time but w ith w restle-offthey w ill be filled before the end of the week. s, TODD BLAIR has the 138 pound slot iced unless he loses a bunch of the toughness that is characteristic of him. stepped into weight last year and played a key role in the Dart's success. Steed is going to tackle the slot. He knows all too well the tremendous competition he'll receive there but last season. Opposing coaches in the area remember him and respect him too. Not too many put in a workout like Kopecky does. 1981-198- 2 AT 155 the Falcons are looking toward Mike Funk and at 167 they have Jeff Evans. Karl Wilson will take over at 185. At heavyweight the Falcons will counter with either A1 Kendrick or Albert Peoples. Kendrick came back to football after a two year layoff this fall. He could certainly add a new dimension with the varsity football program. PEOPLES is only a sophomore but was the Davis County District champion as a ninth grader. Tennis has to feel a little pleasure in the fact people are coming up to him to ask about wrestling now. A couple of years ago it wasnt quite that way, said Tennis who can remember it was he who was asking kids to come out for the team. this weeks practice in ses- sions appears quite excited for it all to get underway. BESIDES Butler and Frodsham, the Darts will also counter with two strong juniors in A1 Kendrick may be Clearfields contender at heavyweight. Danny Granado and Chris Two sophomores who saw plenty of action with the junior varsity last year were Shawn Robinson and Nate Hinckley. They will most likely be positioned in varsity e. learn how to love them, whether you enjoy it or not. Dickson has a pretty good nucleus of talent and experience in which he will build this winters team. But of course it will be Dickson's approach with his team that w ill make the difference down the AND EVEN though Dickson says Thompson gave hin some good knowledge in wrestling him the kind of team he had his final year as the head coach. The 1979 team (Thompson's final) was superb. They placed eight wrestlers in the state tournament and before that won the region championship. TO START with, Dickson '80-8squad with four of the six Darts who placed in the state tournament last season. They happen to all be seniors; Bruce Frodsham. Warren Butler, Robert Steed and Blood. THE DARTS will be facing competition in a brand new region again, this time in Region Four with the same ole pals they battled in football.
