Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, By KEITH DUNCAN For the Davis some things just never change. Da-t- s YES, THE Darts will find themselves in a brand new region and have even moved ranks. And up to the there will be a lot of new 4-- faces (due to graduation) when they get set to battle in that new region. But don't look twice because Ward Sawley and Co. are just as exclusive as ever about good 'ole Dart tradition. And for the Davis gri- diron faithful, don't worry about all these changes, the good 'ole double wing is still in operation. IT APPEARS at this early time in the new football season, that Sawley once again is returning a solid squad that will have to compete in a solid region. Aside front death and taxes, there are a few other things in life that are certain. To wit: the team that emerges as the 1981 Region Four champion will surely know they earned it. THE ODDS MAKER would be foolish to leave Davis out of the running for the championship. Despite the fact the team went 2 a year ago and lost a number of superb athletes, the team re9-- turns excellent prospects and a group of kids who have played and won together for VIS LEADER, SEPTEMBER 3, 1981 N a number of years. That's why you can figure Davis in the running for a third straight trip to the state playoff s under the tenure of Sawley. DAVIS MIGHT have what you would call, a "more balanced attack, at any other school. Most of the time known for its fine running game, the Darts are equipped this year with a couple of strong-arme- d quarterbacks and more than capable receivers. Jim Hill and Brent Olsen are making it a battle for the tight end position. Both play defense and Sawley would eventually like to see one or the other emerge full-fledge- TROY ANDERSON and Mike Colemere are working hard for the split end position. Also, in the running, are Kyle Anderson and Steve Jones. To help develop the pass-rub. dance this seast n will be senior quarterback. Ben Horne. "Ben has been looking real good in both his passing and running and we like the way he can block, said Sawley. n BUT ITS a real close race right now between our junior quarterback, Rick Secrist and Ben. Ben knows Rick is right on his heels and we like that situation, continued Sawley. And if Davis can't pass the Darts can always hand the ball ofT to Spencer DeGraw, perhaps one of the fastest backs in the state, if not the fastest. ALONGSIDE the wing-bacSpencer, will be Troy Meacham at fullback. He isn't quite as fast but has proved himself over the others in the early part of the season. Doug Wehrli, the move-i- n from Bountiful, appears headed for the starting spot at slot back while Drew Olson and Trent Stray horn W ADE ELINT, Spencer Watts and Steve Flauken have Sawleys vote as seniors who will push for starting spots and could very well get them. A number of offensive personnel may have to play defense too, at least until others develop into starting material. corner spot secured with HILL W ILL get the nod to start at one defensive end spot while Craig Wagstaff, who has emerged surprisingly after an injury to his knee last year, could get the call at the other side. HOW GOOD the offensive line will be is still a question mark. But Sawley does have some solid football players to work with including left guard Kirk Storey who wont be hard to find at 6'4". 190 pounds. Kirk is quick and may be the finest trap blocker the team has. Chris Mackey at center is not as big, but is very cap- able. Bruce Frodsham should tie down the right guard slot but has Mark Sta- ples and Keith Ferrin pushing him. THE STRONG inside tackle is secure with Cary Blood, another solid football player.
