Show 1 WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, AUGUST 20, 1981 REFLEX-DA- VIS New Commander Who Knows By RICHARD M. SAG, MD Gastroenteritis is the medical term for an inflamation of the stomach and the intestines. The symptoms one has from this condition are combinations of vomiting and diarrhea. There are many causes of gastroenteritis. The most common cause is infection. Usually the infection is contageous from person to person. The infections affect people of all ages, and usually more severe disease in the younger or older age groups. CURRENTLY there are a large number of families w ho have become ill with gastroenteritis. As goes the rule, many with a small sip at a time until one is sure that the stomach will not cramp up again. If the sips stay down well, then one very slowly increases the amount of fluid taken in at a time. If the vomiting has been THE NEXT thing to do is to look for other symptoms or signs of illness. One should determine if the child has a fever or a rash. Observe to see if the child has lost his appetite or appears to be in pain, or becomes listless not wanting to move about or play. If these symptoms occur and are severe, one should seek medical advice. If the symptoms are mild one can usually go to the next step. For the vomiting child, the first thing to do is withhold all solid and liquid foods until the vomiting ceases, and then for an extra four hours of complete rest. The reason for this is that resting the stomach allows the swelling and the cramping to subside. child. One needs to rest the child which will reduce the bodies drain on precious nutrients: and to rest the intestines long enough so that healing can take place. This can be at times a frustrating experience for the parents, the child and the physician. Patience is the key. Most children w ill get better without severe complications. Dr. Sag is a board certified pediatrician practicing in Layton. Any questions or comments about this article may be made to him at North Davis Pediatrics, 2084 N. 1700 W., Layton, Ut., 84041, or telephone As with vomiting, no medications have been shown to be both effective and safe in controlling the early onset of infectious diarrhea. Paregoric has been commonly used in the past, and is still occasionally used by some parents. The problem w ith paregoric is that it does not cure the diarrhea, and may mask the early signs of dehydration. This same is true with other potent intestinal medications, and their use should be avoided. IF THE diarrhea persists more severe or if it has occured in an infant under six months of age, then after the initial period of stomach rest, one starts a special solution of minerals and carbohydrates that has been especially designed to restore the bodies losses of salts and w ater and to provide the body with an easily digestable form of carbohydrates for energy. Three similar brands of solutions are cur- of the younger children and infants have become quite ill, some requiring hospitalization. As a parent, one can do much for the child with vomiting or diarrhea. Probably the first thing to do is to observe if other family members or close contacts have developed similar symptoms. The severity of symptoms, while often similar may be quite different from person to person. In general, one should be more concerned if one cannot find a source of the infection. I1' diarrhea does not respond to the above treatment, one can try the above mentioned special solutions. No solid foods or milk products should be given. more than three or four days, or becomes worse, one should seek medical advise. As the diarrhea improves, one can start to feed the bland diet as outlined above for vomiting. A cautionary note: If the bowel movements are like water and become large and frequent, the child is at risk of becoming dehydrated, the medical advise needs to be sought. If dispite these efforts, the vomiting persist, or becomes worse, the child will need further medical attention. There are no medications that have been shown to be effective in stopping the vomiting that is caused by infection. Some medications, though, are still used for this purpose and can sometimes cause severe side effects. IF DIARRHEA should occur, one needs to assess how severe the diarrhea is. If the bowel movement has blood or pus or is unusually foul smelling one should seek medical advise. If the bowel movement is looser and more frequent than usual the child should be placed on a clear liquid diet including chicken broth, jello and other similar fluids. If the AFTER THIS period of rest, the next thing to do is to start small liquid feedings. If the vomiting has been mild, chicken broth or jello is a good starting point.
